Slightly shocked I've actually thought of a half-decent topic...

I mean "music not specifically written for the soundtrack".

I watched Buffalo '66 a while ago, and the unlikely combination of Yes' "Heart of the Sunrise" and an imaginary murder/suicide/night-club scene had my chin on my chest.

Other favourites would be Rhapsody in Blue over the last few seconds of "Manhattan" - always brings a lump to the throat

"Summer Wind" as the outro to "The Pope of Greenwich Village"

And Scorsese can usually be relied upon to match sound to image in a memorable way. :)

The Royal Tennenbaums

can't choose better music to match the moods

in particular...

there's a scene where Richie is waiting for his sister at the bus station, and she comes out with 'Stephanie Says' by the Velvet Underground...it's PERFECT

then the scene where the two of them are inside a tent talking about old times and Ruby Tuesday from the stones plays

then that haunting scene where Richie Says "tomorrow I'm going to kill myself" and then proceeds to slice his wrists with 'Needle in the Hay' from Elliot Smith (who incidentally committed suicide himself a few months later) playing

stunning, breathtaking stuff

DAMN YOU MUFF THAT WAS MY ANSWER! :x

Actually you hit it spot on. The first thing I thought about when Elliot killed himself was the royal tennenbaums. RIP Elliot... :(

who doesn't love the scene in Resevoir Dogs when 'stuck in the middle is playing' seriously, genius

a couple bits in Pulp Fiction were pretty damn slick with the musical treatment too

also, more subtle music and all written for the film I think, but Leaving Las Vegas had PERFECT musical treatment

the 'do de do do do' song from Combustable Edison in 'Four Rooms' set the bumbly vibe of the bellhop just perfectly too 8)

i know, i thought the same thing, I'm a big fan of Elliot's music :'(

i've actually wondered many times if Wes Anderson feels any guilt with scripting that scene to that song, i mean it's not like he could have seen it coming, but in retrospect it's very creepy. I found that scene was the one in the movie that stuck with me the longest too.

one of my favorite movies of all time

i thought donnie darko was well over-rated

and i'd say that the use of the cover version of Tears for Fears "Mad World" (which is a STUNNING cover by the way) would be absolute perfect treatment in that film, were it not grossly over-used throughout the film

still, enjoyable piece of work

Tangerine Dream's soundtrack to Thief. Awesome

Any David Lynch film.

Also a perma-favorite's Apocolypse Now; too many great music/scene relationships to point out.
