Is Logic 5.5 (PC) still a smart choice in 2005 ?

hi folks,
I've been an sx2 user for sometimes now, but i'm getting a bit fed up with it, there are a bunch of things i never liked about it and they are now at the center of my workflow since i've been doing nothing but midi editing lately (yeah i know sx isn't bad at it, but there are such things as automations that i really despise...).

A couple of years ago, a lot of people i knew who were into midi were diehard logic users, and from what i remember from a friend demoing it to me, the piano roll was great and the midi routing too.

So i was thinking about getting a used copy instead of upgrading to sx3, but there isn't a demo online anymore of course, and infos are getting rare.

So what i'm wondering is if there are a lot of major features that appeared in sequencers since its release that i will be missing (i'm thinking vst freeze and pdc among others) ?

And if you were a logic 5.5 user, and found that you needed to switch since apple bought it, what made you take that decision ?

Any insight is welcome, and thanks for reading if you went that far...

Cheers

I'm on logic 5.51 pc, it works very well, but can get a little bit unstable with some plugs...ehm, if you don't need super complex mixer utilites, it's great! and the "enviroment" allows you to set up as complex midi/data routings as you want!

Post

yeah, and if you extend it with eXT, it's totall killer!

Post

yeah i'm a die hard eXT user already ;)

but the thing is, aren't there some major features most up-to-date sequencers have, and logic v5.5 hasn't ? Something that you begrudge ? I'd rather know right away than getting frustrated discovering it bit by bit after i bought it.

maybe you could answer these q, if the one above is a bit too elusive...
is there a freeze? proper pdc? are there track folders that can be copied/cut/pasted (i love that in sx...) ?

that's all i can think of right now.

HI

I am an ex Logic user and recently had to use Logic Platinum for a project, well I just couldn't get back into it and ended up transfering the project to another host.

A few people here will tell you that it is usable and I don't doubt it but things REALLY have moved on since the 4 or 5 years ago that Logic was being coded - it has wonderfull automation IMO but why get into a long gone program that will only become increasingly redundent?

I would say look at XT standalone or Live5 - actually both!

They are CURRENT and being supported and developed as we speak - there are others but I think these two are cutting edge.

no pdc or freeze for a start.

Im am sx 3 user myself and sx2 and 1 before that. Logic is a great program and is PC was still being developed then it would be loads better than cubase sx im sure, but it's not :( I feel Logic 5.5 is great if you have been using logic since before the mac reveloution :p and know it inside out and dont wanna change it's worth keeping as for swicthing from sx to 5.5 i don't think is a good move why start to learn a program that is supported anymore, the problem is you will run into more and more problems.

Just my 5p's worth....and before i get killed by logic 5.5 user I do agree it is a GREAT program.

Cheers ;)

flipper > i've tried the live 5 beta, and it's a great app indeed, but as far as midi is concerned i think it's really cluttered, and not half as deep as sx or logic... might be a matter of getting used to, but the piano roll takes a lot effort IMO, and even if it's not like i use multichannel parts and such things on each track, that's definitely something i'd be missing on the long run. Plus i didn't really like the track automations cause you can't see more that one parameter at a time (correct me if i'm wrong). And eventually the groove options are way too simplistic.
I hope abelton will take the midi deeper with the next version cause it would be a killer combo with eXT indeed (any host is twice better with eXT anyway :p ) but i doubt it a bit cause that could easily get in the way as far as ease of use and quick workflow is concerned.
Anyway i hope they do, cause i'll probably get it someday to work on live shows ;)

pawel > you're definitely making sense, but the point is i'm trying to find a host that gives me the most 'natural' workflow for the things i do the most, and i haven't been really lucky so far... And i also keep hoping that it will be back on pc sooner or later :ud:
btw, the no pdc and freeze thing is kind of a turn of... :?

Hi ...

Just out of curiousity, what parts of the SX workflow do you find unintuitive? What slows things down for you? Maybe this might help suggestions.

Also sx 3 has alot of changes from sx 2 also the freeze is much better and the coloured tracks are great ans with 3.1 coming up who know what it will bring ;)

HI

disturb: I had Live4 and sold it!!!

I have been using V5 and although things haven't changed a lot what I have found is on 2 monitors the program really opens up.

I actually find the Midi view and editing quite nice (try Tracktion if you want to throw the computer through the window when editing midi IMO!) there are a few little moves that open it up nicely.

I think after Logic the automation in Live is pretty good and will only get better.

The thing you might want to consider is both XT and Live are growing and being developed - it is likely that any major shortcomings will get developed sooner or later.

I have SXV3 and never really use it as the screen becomes so cluttered and I get nowhere quick - I have tried all the major players and what I have learnt is NOTHING will meet the needs of the user and it is always a compromise, the question is how far can you bend and hope that eventually you will either get the features you need (which is zero for Logic pc) and or accept and change to what the program can currently give you?

The other thing is, just how much have you used Live?

I think you should just keep playing around with it - it might grow on you, besides that XT is perfectly capable as a main host - I am currently finishing off some commercial remixes using it and other than the automation (I really find XT's need to open up automation envelopes and 'point' them to what you want to automate a drag) is a serious piece of kit.

just wait until Babya Logic 2006 comes out, you can upgrade!

Post

If you are into midi then go for the SX3 EnergyXT combo.
I loved Logic PC but I feel this combo is the best
compromise and is fairly stable. Being able to upgrade
is the key however and both have robust forums.

I ditched Logic a few years ago and don't miss it. I tried Logic 7 on the Mac, and realized how much more I DON'T miss it over SX2.... except for the instruments and effects.
