Hi
Has anyone tried it? I'm installing media players onto my new pc and I thought I would use it instead of Real One. What's your opionion of it compared to the original? Are there any downsides to it?
Thanks
Garry.

It's good, it plays .rm clips via media player classic which is very basic.. but hey, it works without all the crap that real installs, you cant go through the real network channels as you can with the real one player, but if you all you want is .rm playback.. Its ideal.

mp classic is much more pleasant, real (while no doubt being very fully featured) just installs shite eveywhere, fills up your toolbar and is generally overly over complex.
i'm sure you can turn all of that off though, i just can't be bothered. it's no doubt very good if set up right.

yep, i use real and quicktime alternative they are great.
The upsides of using them as opposed to the actual players is you don't have to put up with the buggy, sluggy overbloated pieces of shite they actaully are

The only thing I use nowadays is VLC. It plays everything IMHO, and even if it does a slightly less-than-satisfactory job of playing obscure formats (e.g., some crazy-ass Xvid/Ogg file with insane VBR), it's still an improvement over something like WMP which won't even load the file. But honestly I've never tried VLC with any RealMedia because I avoid that format like the plague...
And another nice feature of VLC (aside from the price - free!) is that you can just download a zipped archive and run the executable from your desktop in case you don't have the necessary access privileges to do a full-blown installation... i.e. a computer at work!

I couldn't find an ALAC (quicktime) codec for VLC. Nor have I seen realmedia codec(s) for it. And I can't get it to use my Echo soundcard. So I generally stick with Foobar2000 (new beta has ALAC). But VLC is a very nice player.
What's the URL for the *alternatives, btw?

There's loads of download spots. Here's one...

I'm not familiar with a main download site, if there is one.

Shit, I hadn't considered an alternative to quicktime! That would be great as I hate that it always asks me to upgrade to pro when starting up.
I'm also thinking of using winamp, as it's already my music player. I need to find a plugin to control the volume of multiple instances first though as I like to watch some videos while playing music. But then again I'm reading a thread on winamp's site which makes the whole procedure of setting up winamp to play mov and rm files very complicated.
Interestingly, according to afterdawn.com there's a hack called RealMedia Splitter that allows WMP to play rm files - as long as Real/Alternaive is installed of course.

Agreed... Both are really good if all you want is either Real or Quicktime format playback...pHz wrote:do it ... just grab the quicktime alternative too while youre at it ...

Damn do I hate it when these software companies take hold of your OS and force you to have things THEIR way... Ghaaa... I'll never say anything good about realnetworks after the last time I installed their player...

And I'd missed vlc 0.8.2 being released, which I spotted on their "other downloads" page. Every little helps... (And I managed to get vlc082 to talk to my Echo Mia, which is nice. It still crashes much more than foobar...)
Still, vlc 0.8.2 won't play this quicktime stream
