Like ext or fruity loops. Im looking for a way to have a better piano roll inside of sonar by loading an entirely different host inside as a vst. Maybe a piano roll vst would work. Anyone know of one? But anyone have a list compiled of hosts that have this feature? I think all hosts should have this feature!

A piano roll VST wouldn't work in Sonar due to it not passing midi through VST plugins...so unless there are any MFX piano roll's, then this is not an option. I think Sonar also supports OPT, but if I am right in thinking that Acid Pro's piano roll is an OPT one, then we would be taking a backwards step
The only other host that I have heard mention of working as a DXi/VSTi is Console. And I agree about more hosts having this facility...I have already posted on the P5 forum a few times asking for P5 to run as a DXi (albeit for different reasons than yours), as I dislike Rewire and want a tighter integration between S4 and P5.

What? That sounds like a rather major limitation for a sequencer to have, particularly in the $500 to $900 range.xylyx wrote:A piano roll VST wouldn't work in Sonar due to it not passing midi through VST plugins...

I understand Sonar doesn't even support VST natively.. VSTs only work through VST->DX adapter.

Sonar works with every vst on the planet with no hic-ups and no limitations long as your using fx expansion.
Sonar 4 has won more major awards than any other host this year. Orion is nice but is no where near Sonar 4 for features quality or functionality.
Snyapse is a nice company for begining recording artists as they have alot of cool features that todays music involves but Sonar 4 is for professionals that really need to have a stable DAW and very cpu effecient, while I dont use the piano roll feature I do use Sonar 4 in alot of post and pre production work that I do.

I think he just read my signature. I was wondering that Orion thing a bit too.jens wrote:your post is full of shit...Stairsteps wrote:... Orion is nice but is no where near Sonar 4 for features quality or functionality...

yeah, I bet you're right - from reading the rest of his post I'd say it's highly likely that's he's stupid enough for that...Mark Vera wrote:

That's only meaningful to people who present or receive "awards." Real people are interested only in results.Stairsteps wrote: Sonar 4 has won more major awards than any other host this year.
I'm sure Sonar is terrific. Just a bit of a shock that it's not really a VSTi host; that it only does VSTi with an emulation layer.

Sonar's base version is $150. Orion's base version is also $150.Mark Vera wrote:I think he just read my signature. If I were considering either of these products, I'd think the claim bears investigation.

eventhough i can't help you much here, i was wondering how you were planning on using a plugin's piano roll instead of the host's one, without ending up with the most cumbersome setup ever?
I'm an eXT user too, and IMO it's piano roll is getting closer and closer to a dream every week, so if you came up with a handy way to do such a thing, i'd REALLY like to know about it
cheers

This one again! Whenever Sonar gets mentioned around here, the old wrapper thing rears it's head...even though it is a non-issue. Nearly all hosts use a wrapper of some sort, it is just not referred to as a wrapper (in most cases) and runs at startup, rather than separately like Cakewalk's does. FLStudio even refers to it's VST/DX part as the FL Wrapper...yet we never hear cries about FL using a wrapper.james0tucson wrote:.

There is no major disadvantage to using a separate wrapper...in fact, the opposite is true. The wrapper being separate means that if Cakewalk update this with bug fixes/new features, then users need only download one file to update the wrapper, rather than a bunch of patches to update all the Cakewalk software they own.
Just a final question: does Logic get this accusation thrown at it from users of other software on the Mac? That it has to use a wrapper for VST plugins as it doesn't host VST natively?

Just to add to my above post: do you think Orion is supporting VSTi and DXi natively, or could it be that hidden away inside Orion's code there is some wrapping going on?Mark Vera wrote:I understand Sonar doesn't even support VST natively.. VSTs only work through VST->DX adapter.
