So it was my understanding that freeze was implemented to take the hit off your system.
If using parameters/automation/etc while the freeze is on is what is being sought after......I think that is harder to do...........isn't it?

Bounce or Export do exactly all of the things first mentioned. Freeze has been out for a while now, and I still fail to see why anyone is excited about it.
What the question was, was can you treat a frozen part in exactly the same way you can an audio part? Of course you can...that's all freeze is. So you Export to audio...duh!
Why is it sooooooo difficult to use export?

I've got a athlon 64 3500+ abd 2GB of DDR3 ram and I've maxed out my CPU with this lastest track that has 98 devices in Reason 3 rewired to Ableton Live 4 with 18 audio tracks and 7 midi tracks. I had to upgrade my pc just to increase the CPU shelf .....can't wait to upgrade to Live 5 to get theBONES wrote:I don't need no stinkin' freeeeeeeze! I work within the limits of my environment. In fact I could probably get away with half the CPU power I have at my disposal so I am constantly amazed at how important this seems to so many. I just can't imagine what it would take to overload my CPU.

Live 5's freeze is pretty awesome. I never used freeze before this, just bounced the audio out, but I make my own loops and would have to keep from using a softsynths effects and add a separate plugin for delays and such because the new audio track wouldn't have the same start and end point decays as my midi track with the VSTi plugged in. No more bouncing if I can freeze. my loop stays intact to the way I was practicing it with the VST plugged in. yeah! I do a lot of session view work too, then record the session in the main part later and you can still change the scene clips no prob with the track frozen. This is getting way too easy to start throwing down ideas quick and open up multiple VST's on my outdated machine without it bogging down.

Yeah, I agree with you there Wormhelmet... the freeze in Live 5 is the best - or at least the most useful - I have tried yet

Really? I think Live 5's freeze is totally unusable. The track is literally "frozen" and you can't even adjust the volume of it after you freeze. I figured it would just render an audio file and disable the fx. Also frozen tracks disappear, so I don't even bother using it.

That isn't true... perhaps you need to take another look at it?Hypertone wrote:Really? I think Live 5's freeze is totally unusable. The track is literally "frozen" and you can't even adjust the volume of it after you freeze.
On frozen tracks you can adjust the following:
* Volume
* Pan
* Effects Send amount on any bus
* Solo / Mute
* Crossfader direction/amount
* Audio destination
* Track Delay / PDC
* Any automation parameter from the right hand sidebar in Arrange view (but you can't add/draw new breakpoints over the acutal track - only change the overall amount in the properties sidebar on the right)
You can also launch frozen clips in real time from Session view, including recording a fresh/different arrangement into the Arrangement view (which then needs refreezing, naturally)
And if you save the set "self contained", you can access all the frozen clips as individual audio files, edit them in an external wave editor such as sound forge/audition, and even use them in completely seperate projects!!!!
Please have another look at this... it will prevent you from posting stuff that isn't true
The frozen audio renders do seem to sometimes go missing after a full system reboot, and I'm not sure why this is yet. However, you can simply refreeze the track(s) concerned.I figured it would just render an audio file and disable the fx. Also frozen tracks disappear, so I don't even bother using it.

i thought i would revisit this thread. Are there any news about improved freeze in some hosts? Is there any host except for sonar that has ability to move frozen parts? Sonar does this but needs lots of streamlining before I would consider it. Just too much clicking to acomplish simple tasks. I am lazy hehe

I have a few CPU hungry plugs that max out my 2000+ Athlon pretty fast. I was experimenting in Live 5 and recorded a few phrases that were pushing CPU to 90%. I put up with crackles on audio and slow performance long enough to edit the cutoff and resonance envelopes, then froze the track. Down to 2-3% CPU use after frozen and I could still switch between clips on the same track while frozen. Fricken amazing. Only takes about 10 seconds to freeze the track and instant unfreeze. Usable with many frozen tracks at the same time. That is simply amazing for pegging out my CPU before the freeze.

I just started using Sonar4 and its Freeze function, and I'm very happy with it. Its very fast to freeze/unfreeze. But I'm new to this, so can't really say much about.
