Add me to that list. The trick is to use the "mix" knob and the saturation trims on the back, but overall the distortion/compression still sounds farty in the bass region to me. It just gets too heavy-handed too fast...
Off to try the MasterComp demo, hopefully this one will be more impressive.

The decision to use a gui almost identical to VW is gonna backfire on them. Most people who actually know what they're doing associate VW with digital grit, grain and farts. That could be a compliment if it was good sounding digital grit, grain and farts but that's not the case with VW.
Sure they gui is usable, but they could've at least change the color scheme.
This new compressor seems to be in a different class entirely.

Shortly after this Vintage Warmer thingy came out we had a veritable spate of...erm..."vintage warmed" albums come through here for mastering. We would put them up on the mains...listen for a few seconds...and go, "Huh?!"

I'm thinking about the Sonalksis SV-315 Compressor - you've said it has a rubbery feel or sound, whatever you meant I'm looking for a non-transparent mastering compressor that is spongy or rubbery (haha great definitions, eh?) and that pumps - if I want it to - in a musical way.
Is that the Sonalksis SV-315 or the PSP MasterComp - or both in your opinion? I won't nail your head to the floor if I don't like either one - I just want to know what you (everybody else is welcome too!) think about these 2 mastering comps in comparison.
PS - Please no more VW stories folks - it's really a differnt thing altogether

Well, for master comp I don't really prefere any plugin compressor anymore. I'll either let a real mastering house do it or then I put a tiny little bit of sintefex fairchild on it (or the fairman if I don't want to lose bottom end) to glue the track together.
Of those two plugins that you mentioned I think that for a whole mix the PSP master comp might work better but this I am unsure of until I get my hands on a properly usable demo! I very much like the sonalksis compressor for individual tracks but I rarely use it on the master bus anymore. It's also a rather hard compressor to get pumping at will. Yes, it DOES have a sort of a rubbery, kind of squishy sound to it but it might not be what you want. If you feed a kick drum with a really sharp attack trough it it will compress it to sound *FLAP!!*THUDD* instead of *TCHACK!*THUDD*.. if you know what I mean?
Also, you have the Soniformer2 no? It can do some nice pumping now with that new downwards compression when you play with the attack and release settings.
And last but not least, never forget about the golden compressor from kjaerhus when it comes to plugins!

Thanks bmanic - my sonalksis demo ran out so I'm going by memory but when I demo'd it I was trying to get the most transparent sound I could...

Concerning the PSP MasterComp demo - are you able to get some automation envelopes happening in your host - it's kind of awkward but by grabing an envelope with 2 nodes on it in Sonar4 I could effectively move the attack knob in real time while the audio was playing.
PS: I guess the sound and feel I'm looking for is more or less 'rms-ish' I'll try and tweak GCO1 from Kjaerhus I remember it having a peak-y kind of feel but then again with the envelopes I should be able to get a pump out of it - especially if I use the pump envelope, good idea too!

All I can say after playing with this a few days is - fully functional demo or not - it doesn't take a rocket scientist (Lord knows I'm not one ) to feel the vibes this compressor is capeable of.
It's definitely not for tracking. But even with nice, low 1:1 ratios, it gives source material enhanced vitality and glue.
Sort of like my UAD Fairchild, but modern (futuristic?)-sounding.

anyone else looking at this or have any further thoughts...I really like the sound of it so far for a mastering comp (for a whole mix - by definition ) and don't have many things that can equal it in my testing...Friday is release date - if I can hold my breath that long...

On the plugin side of things it really looks like this is going to be one of the best mastering compressors around. If I didn't have a hardware compressor I'd probably buy this baby! I'm still waiting for the proper demo tho..
