BASTINADO

NOUN:
Bastinado is a form of torture or corporal punishment which consists of beating the soles of the victims' bare feet with a hard object, like a cane or rod, a club, or a piece of wood. This torture is effective owing to the clustering of nerve endings in the feet, and the structure of the foot, with numerous small bones and tendons. The feet were often tied together or to a wooden plank, and the victim would be made to walk around on his or her damaged feet afterwards, sometimes carrying weights.
... a set of 6 ('ignored' is the original sound and there are 5 variations) layered bass sounds from non-samplebased VST synths (linplug alpha classic and multiple instances of curve beta) with different effects added for each of the 5 variations ...

... packaged samplesets (.sf2 / .vs3) available at the auditorium (link below) ... pack of raw unlooped samples (6.2Mb) also available if you want to map them in your sampler of choice (feel free to post links to other formats if you do so) ...

Are the soundfiles contained in the SF2 version looped?

I just checked these out, and a few small niggles...

some have clipping, not good.

They need editing too, at the start and the end there are spacers.

Personally, for bass sounds, i wouldnt loop them, but i would hold for longer, and put a natural fade on the end of the sample. Tedious, but along with trimming it makes for better samples.

Also, id sample more for bass, even up to every note on just 2 or 3 octaves.

some nice sounds tho, might have a go at layering them in Oron later (doing some sampling myselkf right now)

Cheers :D

Post

thats a bit odd ... which ones are you seeing clipping and where are you seeing spaces at the start ???

the spaces at the end i admit shouldnt be there ... but when i did the Vsampler versions the sampler envelope shuts off before the end of the file so i didnt bother trimming the raw samples TBH ...

... but yeah ... im really only playing around at the minute ... more to teach myself Vsampler3 properly than anything else (has it for ages but never REALLY esplored it) ...

The clipping was in the 'squashed' set, quite minimal but there.

You can see here, and also the space at the start. Its very small, but i would still edit it out myself.

yeah ... found the clipping ... the 'shifted' samples were bad too ... i THINK that gap is the signal delay from the compressor on that sample ...

... oh well ...

UPDATE

all files updated (apologies to anyone whos already taken the time to download these) ...

> loop points added to dry (basstinado___ignored) samples

> some variations (basstinado___ignored & basstinado___shifted) revised due to minor clipping issues

> basstinado___squashed replaced by basstinado___cheesed

... all links in original post ...

thanks for the heads up dave ... clipping SHOULD be sorted now but i havent got the patience to trim that tiny silence (i WILL watch out for it from now on though) ...

Where are the looped samples? In the VSampler file?

Post

Oh yeah, another tip/idea. Try sampling in MONO for these, you can cut the file size down, so sample more notes

Post

i only looped the files in the ___ignored variation ... click the bottom link to get them ...

... but be warned ... looping short but modulated bass samples aint too pretty !!!

slainte  rob

Post

mono would be good ... but some of these are stereo modulated quite a lot so might lose something ...

(like i said ... just playing really ... and didnt really just want to do some 'straight' bass samples)

Got em now, i'll have a go at some layers and mapping tomorrow

Cheers :)
