Nearly 2 pages of posts and I wonder if Thoth93 is any the wiser! I guess that is always going to be the problem with threads like these (especially when you also open the floor with an 'have I missed any host?' comment)...you will inevitably get loads of recommendations and never any real resolution.

to get a real resolution, the most efficient way is to get back to I via V

:? what are you on about?

We can't make any decision for him - we can only discuss and give recommendations based on our perceptions, impressions, ideas and conventions... - and we did this!

well i'm a fan of Tracktion as a central host. for me, personally, it's my favourite.

in the first post tho you say you lost your song on closing the demo - i'd just like to point out that there is no save limitation in the demo, you can save your projects to come back to if you decide to buy it. it just won't let you render audio, and does that noise every now and then.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

If you have and rejected it, I would advise you not to dismiss anything based on the fact that its initally difficult to get used to, as you seem tempted to do with eXT, unless you have something you need to get done by next week. If it takes you a month to get to grips with it, that should be seen as time well spent if the app meets all your needs. Certainly much better than workign with somethign that was easy to get into that ultimately falls short of your expectations 6 months down the line.
I did download a demo, but have yet to play with it much. I'll do so tonight.

And I have logged a bit more time with EnergyXt and think I'm starting to "get it" more. So there is hope. ;)

I still like Fruityloops, though. Don't ask me why, I just do, but I'm willing to work a bit harder to spend my money a bit more wisely, if that's what it comes to.

Oh, I am -- much wiser. I have a few new options to consider, some new considerations to make, etc. The information is all good and very much appreciated.

And I have some time yet to decide on which host is right. I think I mentioned earlier that my wife and I are going on vacation at the end of the week, to a place with no computers, no phones, etc. So I'm not buying anything until we get back for that and for other basic financial reasons:

"The car exploded! Lucky we've got plenty of extra money in the checking account!"

"Well, maybe not as much as you think."

"What do you mean ... sweetheart?"

"Well, I got all these neat recommendations for music software, so I bought FL Studio, Tracktion 2, EnergyXT, a new, faster computer to run them all on, an 88-key midi controller, a billion sample libraries ...."

Which believe me -- I would do if I had my druthers. ;)

I never said you could make a decision for him...but these threads have a tendency towards everyone just mentioning their favourite without giving any real info or comparison with other stuff (I'm not saying that this has been the case here, although one or two have just named a host and offered little else). In the end, you usually end up with every host being mentioned and nothing having being achieved...I could just see this one going the same way.

Part of my post was possibly coloured by the other topic running at the moment (Orion vs Sonar) where someone has asked for a comparison between the two and yet people insist on dropping in and suggesting T2 when that wasn't even asked for...

Anyway, Thoth93 says he has benefitted from the topic, so the answer to my wondering is obviously 'yes', which is all the matters.

o.k. I see your point... :-)

Podium looks very promising, a strong contender. very configurable and powerful. Steep learning curve though (I found) but as stated, that does not mean poor usability once you are over the hump (in fact, often the opposite).
Possibly I will migrate to this in a few months.

Currently using FLoops. My main beef with it is not-so-easy to use/limited audio support. The pattern model just doesn;t jive as well with audio currently.
FL does come with a bunch of pretty decent bread and butter plugins.

The demo of tracktion seemed to demonstrate that midi editing was a bit fiddly. In FLoops its just "bang bang bang" and you are there (or should that be "click click click"

I'll have to look at Energy XT further. Last time I downloaded it seemed like a rather difficult to understand audiomulchy type thing (this is quite a while ago)

Lots of the features of big boys like Cubase but only $90. Download the demo here...http://www.zynewave.com/

Wopelka wrote:i love EnergyXT too, but i'd never use it as my main sequencer. to me, it's more the icing on the cake.
If it wasn't for ORION's instruments and effects I would use eXT as my main sequencer in a heartbeat. Its just so powerful and incredibly flexible. .e.g. If you want to work with patterns, just creeate them in a MIDI Part for each instrument and assign each part to a key. So you end up with 4 bass patterns assigned to C1, D1, E1, F1, just like Pattern A1, A2, A3 or A4 in ORION. Then you use the Sequencer as your playlist and enter the approriate note in the sequencer to trigger each pattern. Its much slicker than copying/pasting a pattern because if you need to change it, you just change the MIDI part and every time you trigger it you get the new one.

What, agreeing with you? Can't say I'm happy about it, either.
