Mr Smith wrote:Evolver Version 3.0

There is a new version of the Evover software. All serials above 1858 already have 3.0; versions 1 and 2 can be updated. In this case, one of the two processors must be physically replaced. The update kit is available for $25 from our on-line sales page here. Before purchasing the kit, you should download the zip file that list the changes and replacement instructions. The IC replacement is easy to do, but if you prefer, you can always send in your Evolver and we'll update it for you for the same $25 fee. Please email us before returning your Evolver.

There are now a number of MIDI CCs to which the Evolver will respond. Most of the other changes are for complete compatibility with the Poly Keyboard. If you are not interested in the CCs, and don't have a Poly Keyboard, you likely do not need to update to 3.0.

Note that registered Poly Keyboard owners do not have to pay for the upgrade.
Here's the link.

Midi CCs :D

Thanks for that. Dunno how long it'll take to get the chip from the US, but it should be worth $25 alone to get my Evolver to respond to my ReMotes' sliders and knobs and joysticks and things...

Oh, and it looks like its free postage on the update. Nice.

Yes, easy MIDI adds a whole new dimension to the Evo :) I'll updating for sure.

On a side note, I just noticed that my controller keyboard could have sent RPNR and whatever messages almost as easily.

Free?! How cool would that be. I really like the way DSI communicates with customers, it's remarkably free of the usual marketing hype bs.

Post

Yeah, the Remotes will send RPN codes as well, but CC's are easier to mess with... ;)

Did you get an announcement email from DSI, btw? I dont seem to have done...

Nope, didn't get an e-mail. Someone on the yahoo group gave the heads up, maybe it has not been sent yet.

Post

Ah right. Must take a look at the Yahoo group some time...

It's a cool list, some of the preset gurus like Stefan Trippler and Ravi are active there and the discussion is civilized and helpful.

Well, I got my upgrade chip today.

<edit> Doh. Sometimes Im too dumb for my own good. Sigh. I checked the OS version instead of the DSP version. Now to swap chips, and try and not cock that up as well.

How easy was to install wr? I wasn't sure whether to bother, but at $25 it's probably worth it.

Post

Dead easy actually. There's a PDF on the website (with the sysex files, in a .zip) but its erally straightforward if you read it properly (*)

Do the DSP update first. I couldnt get MIDI-OX to send it properly, but the Evolver editor worked fine. Then pull off the knobs, and undo six screws on the base to get off the cover, then six more screws to take out the motherboard. Lever the old chip out with a screwdriver. Replace the new chip. Put it all back together again. Ta-da.

(*) Stupidly, after the update I kept doing the wrong thing when checking the DSP software version; I kept checking the OS version instead. Dave Smith corrected me, but it was in the PDF all along...

I just ordered a second hand evolver which is a version 2.
Will I be able to controll the evolver with my Virus nobs
or will I have to update to version 3?

Depends whether the Virus can send MIDI RPNs rather than CC's, I guess.
