hi everyone i just bought a new notebook a few days ago. this is my first notebook so i'm still learning and getting used to it. i heard that centrino laptops are very quiet compared to other/older models but my cpu fan seems to be constantly on. It varies in noise and speed if i'm playing a game or just using the net, but even when i'm not doing anything the cooling fan is still on and audible.. is this normal? I've checked my cpu temperature, etc. its normal. i have a friend who has a an older type of notebook which is NOT centrino but her notebook completely stops the fan when there is nothing happening on screen. Hmmm this made me wonder because in essence my 'quiet' centrino is now louder than hers in certain circumstances.
It would be really good if someone could give me some advice! thanks!

This is NOT normal. My wife's notebook was doing the same thing. I used task-manager to check for programs. And one program that was suposed to be IDLE was at 90% CPU usage... I deleted the program, and now its normal again.

thanks for the replies... could it be just my particular brand of laptop does this? (its an ASUS M6022R) i took a picture of my task manager.. everything is sitting on 0 (even in the area thats been cut off in the pic) but system idle process is sitting at over 90% what the hell does that mean? anyone? also.. my notebook is sitting on a replective surface (my computer desk which makes it sound slightly louder than it is.. even so the fan is constantly running even though i'm just browsing the net)
ps. how do i attach a pic to my next post so i can show you my task manager?

Not too sure about this.. but i think the system idle process actually refers to the ammount of CPU sitting idle...I have it up to 99% when nothings happening...

If nothing is happening it should be sitting at an average of 4% and NO, it's not 'just your brand'. It's not normal for any CPU.

Fans are always on, the vary in speed though, so it could be that you have a faulty (noisy) fan, if you are using plenty of vst's etc expect the fan to make a noise as it has to keep the cpu temp down.
But if its doing it when you are idle in windows then something is definetly up, see if you can get a read out of the fan's rpm and the cpu temperature.. This will give you an indication of whats going on.
Also Idle speed should be 99% when there's nothing going on... Thats what your computer has left to play with... hence why its called idle.

Thanks for the advice everyone.. i got my head around the system idle process so its all good. The fan nis still making a noise... the hair coming out of the vents in not really hot.. actually its only luke warm if i'm just browsing the net, however the fan is audible in a quet room. I rang the computer shop where i got the laptop from and they said its perfectly normal fto have the fan ALWAYS running. So maybe its just the fan itself making a noise. also i checked out my temperature stats during heavy use and even then after hours of use the cpu temperature and everything is within normal temperatures, so i guess i just have a noisy fan. anyways i'm taking it back to the shop tomorrow for them to have a quick listen.. hopefully i'll end up with a queter laptop.
