You know it seems too me that a lot of people want imperfect instruments to sound perfect....it's getting all too sterile if you ask me, sometimes it's the imperfections that give music it's character...a guitar is not a perfect instrument and shouldn't be treated as such...neither are drums, pianos, organs and even people, ...

nonono,i said my wife is spoiled by perfection

ie i feel i am treated immensley well by her considering what i bring to the world

but when i have to explain it it loses it irony and were in everything else not off topic so im sorry

then they'll pay extra for samples and effects that let them put the imperfections back in...and then they complain about the imprefections not being perfect enough.

i know what you mean though, some imperfections really are part of the overall character of the sound. just look at hammonds...the designers saw key click as an annoying imperfection but, to many of us, its a desired character.

back at the guitar repair shop i worked at, we did absolutely killer setups. but even the best built, best setup guitar will give you fret buzz if you hit the strings hard. so when some customers would ask about completely removing all fret buzz (under all situations and playing styles) one of my friends/co-workers used to always say...if you want an instrument that doesnt buzz, play a keyboard.

anyway, i guess with each advance in quality, we are getting further away from the reality and life of some instruments. but on the other hand, i suspect (because people also strive to put the imperfections back) the ultimate goal will eventually not be to remove all imperfections but to completely imitate real life...just with more flexibility.

well, at least i hope that in the end there will be some benefit, otherwise we could have just played the original instruments in the first place.

but in any case, in another 10-20 years, we'll look back at our current perfection and say 'wow, how dated and lofi.' and people will again pay extra to have access to our current imperfections.

hink, you are right on, we finally agree on something completly...listen to rolling stones, neil young, velvet underground...ie ROCK MUSIC...it ain't classical...i like to think electronic music can acheive the same results... warm, emotional, fun, get your feet tapping and head bobbin'.... that's how i think anyway..

I've often found that the little imperfections can add a lot to a song. I was recording a part for a song with a heavy delay on the guitar and at the end of the riff my hand dropped down and I hit a string by accident. I was about to delete the take when I heard the delayed version. It synced up perfectly with the drums and actually sounded pretty cool, so I kept it.

I'm going to re-record that song for my album before much longer, now I'm sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out how to re-create that sound.

The virtual instruments I most enjoy the sound of tend to be those that have an organic feel, such as AAS' physical modelling stuff. They model imperfection in a fairly realistic way, such that successive notes generally don't sound identical.

agreed, I love Rolling Stones dirty sound, raw ethnic (non western) music, MOM sample garbage mixed with real intruments, '20 records of delta blues,

the digital sound era brought this up much more, but actually IMHO just changed the sound of imperfections (glitches) and let the acoustic electric imperfection become a "classic" as owned by a past era,
brought to counsciusness and challenging musician creativity with new imperfection

are we getting spoiled by perfection?
