what could the next upgrade be, seems like alot of manufacturers have ableton on the mind these days and if p5-2 is any indication maybe sonar 5 will turn out to be quite a ticker

Its actually just covering their arses. The company I work for [again] gives free upgrades to anyone who orders 6 weeks prior to the announcement of the next version. They do it for legal reasons rather than because they are nice guys [although they are, mostly]. Usually the announcement is 3 or 4 months before release so it means that for almost 6 months you can buy the current version and get a free upgrade to the next one.
