That stereotyped "80's Soviet" metallic sound...

I'm looking for a sample of that sound you usually hear in 80s Cold War films (actually, there's a ton of it used in Goldeneye as well).

It's basically sounds like someone striking a big long hollow metal pipe (which is probably what it is...). Haven't been able to find anything suitable, either dry or post-reverb.

is that really what you mean? or are you talking about a (as-used-in-typical-east-west-espionage-thriller-harry-palmer-agogo) zither sound?

Post

yay zither. I was sat there last night trying to remember name of one of those :)

Hi guys, thanks for the suggestions. Sadly, it's not the zither sound I'm after.

I recorded a little snippet of Goldeneye with the sound in it. (though sadly it has Sean Bean's heavy boots in it as well...)

Soviet metallic sounding type thing

(if your browser uses Apple Quicktime, the sound may cut out halfway through as it's loading, try playing it when it's fully loaded. Problem with Quicktime trying to play small files before the file is cached.)

ah!

hmmm...

Based on your description I thought maybe it was a struck anvil you were after, but after listening I'd say you want a good old-fashioned length of pipe (I'm guessing that the diameter is greater than 12 inches), and some 'verb.

Thanks guys.

There's actually a construction site nearby. Maybe if I ask the foreman nicely, he'll let me bang on his pipe... :scared:

clueless: Thanks for hunting that one out. I had a listen to a few other pipe samples but that one seems to be the closest so I'll give that one a try. Cheers!
