Hi all.

As the family pianist, I've been asked to source a decent home keyoard for a nephew. Should have full sized keys, (at least 61 of) and have a good set of sounds, with a decent piano sound a must.

Obviously looking at a Yamaha or Casio affair here, but to be honest, I am used to playing the real thing. I have limited knowledge of these plastic home thingies. So, advice? Anyone get any recommendations?

and plenty of gee-wizz sounds to keep nephew amused

Hello ancoats,

"**Been offered a Casio CTK-631 for fifty quid. That a good deal??? **

I'm not sure of the lingo with rspects to quid, but if that means dollars, then check it out to see if it all works.

Before I saw your edit of original message, I was going to say a Casio WK-3000 is what I have and I am very pleased with it. It makes for a good GM sound device in the entry level. I paid 299 dollars for it, I'm not sure what your spending power for this is. I would check out the CTK-631 for 50 quid first.

If you think your nephew might grow into some sequencing, the WK-3000 would do nicely for small change and give good results.

In my case, I use Finale Allegro 2005 for notation and the WK-3000 for my sound module. This setup works very well and is not hard on the pocket book. I use to even have a PSR-273 and that worked very well and it cost 159 dollars. I just thought the WK-3000 was better. Really, any kybd in that range does pretty good for what they were intended for. 150 dollars and above for a new Yamaha or Casio home kybd will serve you well.

If 50 quid means 50 dollars, and the CTK-631 is in good shape, than I would say yes, go for it.

the roland e series stuff had a very good reputation as an "intelligent" home keyboard a few years back. i've seen a few in future music and on ebay and stuff for £120-£180 often with a stand and a pedal but obvioulsy thats a lot more than £50.

the e series had some pretty good sounds and would probably have more longevity but for the money, the casio seems like quite a good deal.

Thanks guys. Think I might amble over to Cash generator in town tomorrow. They usually have loads of these things. I have a budget of £100, so, should be able to get something.

Saw a review of the Casio. It specifically laughed at the piano sound, so, prob not good choice.

How about this? It could be hype, but they seem to praise the piano on this board.
