Hi, Trevor Magnusson the Clone Ensemble guy here.
Does any here know a guy called Steve Worful? Might also go by the handle of Yephoe or YephoesBack. He claims to be a registered Clone Ensemble user, wants the unlock key after a disk crash (sad story, I hear it a lot, and almost always come to the rescue). Trouble is I have no records of the guy, and I keep pretty good records. Then again there were a couple of times *I* had a disk crash, and a registration or two might have slipped from my files.
It's really hard to find the right balance between playing firm with a scam artist, and the risk of insulting an innocent user.

Hi Trevor it's Hink...AKA John Hinckley, how are you?....you went so out of your way to help me out if you remember...might I suggest in the interest of good faith like you showed me perhaps it would be best to let it slide.

I mean you hear the story often and how often does someone try to scam you? If it happens more often then I would say opposite...but it could be good for you to just help him out, just beware of future attempts.....:)

Never heard of him. I say give the benefit of the doubt if you are unsure. Still, you should both keep better track of your records if you have doubts and he has no proof of purchase.

its always better to give someone the benefit of the doubt unless something is absolutely certain of course. And may I recommend spinrite to avoid all the hd crashing

If he's a registered user of CloneEnsemble (like me  ) he should have a receipt from ShareIt (sent by E-Mail).
Ask him to send the receipt to you for verification.

Peter's one the case!

However, if he had an HD failure, he may well have lost the receipt as well!!

Donate Alien solo to me, Theo!

is spinrite really all that useful?

i've found hard-disks crash because the motors fail, controller boards fail, or the head breaks. I've had lot of HDD crashes, but never due to 'corrupted data'. is this more snake oil from Steve Gibson?

That's always a hard situation to be in from the developer's point of view.

The chances that he has absolutely *no* proof of purchase coinciding with it being the one purchase record you *don't* have is pretty damn slim.

Then again, it takes so much balls to try to scam someone that way that he's probably legit (*unless* a few others have done it before, in which case you're on a "sucker list" somewhere!). Of course if he's a scammer then he'll *never* legit buy from you anyway, so you won't lose out on a sale by trusting him, while you *are* losing time through the administrative hassle.

If it were me and I trusted my own records and there was no trail though ShareIt (who likely could look it up by credit card number or whatnot), then I'd be hard pressed to say "Here's your free copy". I'd probably at least charge $15 as an "administrative fee" if there was no paperwork available anywhere.

At any rate, never heard of the guy, so I can't vouch for him.
