I would like to add that I can't praise the usefulness of convolution in the process too much.
Especially when using non-reverb impulse sounds. Like a distorted drum beat, or screaming, etc as the IR...
This is a great topic.
Nice tut steve!

Have you tried Boogex, yet? Fantastic convolution engine (seems like there's no latency) and a built amp-sim distortion unit. I've used it maybe a little too much lately.[ xerocreep ] wrote:I would like to add that I can't praise the usefulness of convolution in the process too much.

That's a very cool and clear tutorial. Sounds good, too.shamann wrote:

I have it, but have not tried it on any processing in that vein...yet.shamann wrote:Have you tried Boogex, yet? No idea why I hadn't thought of that before.

I should actually be able to put my 2 cents in here too. For me drones can come from anywhere; hardware, software or feedback, but personally I prefer to use the SY85 (endless release) or the Juno60 (hold is my friend)
But a drone isn't a drone without evolution, and the paths to that can be as wide and narrow again as you would want them to be. Offcourse you can create your own modulated drones (KarmaFXsynth, or Sophia are good soft choices, where the latter isn't as easy to tame)
My personal preference for drones goes to live implementation. I try to explore the insides of a sound tweaking the synths and FX as I go along and just let it flow, but usually it's more a part (although a big one) of a whole then it rather is a singular soundsource for a track.

It took me a very very long time just to figure out what half of those controls do on Sophia... But it sounds cool....
Karma FX is definitely one of the coolest modular vsti's I can think of. (although it just ate a number of patches I had in a song for my next release with its latest update...)

It occured to me that I've never heard your music, John. I've seen your make-up effects presumably, as I've watched both Buffy and Babylon 5.JohnVulich wrote:I constantly use patch randomizing to aid in this approach.
Seems only just and right then that I hear some music, too.
Ever considered posting in the Cafe, or do you sell CDs somewhere?

Sometime soon I suppose. Thanks for showing an interest... I think.shamann wrote:It occured to me that I've never heard your music, John. I've seen your make-up effects presumably, as I've watched both Buffy and Babylon 5.JohnVulich wrote:I constantly use patch randomizing to aid in this approach.

Unfortunatley , I tend to experiment more so than produce. Then again I'm probably not the only one here that suffers from that ailment.

I like layering stuff when it comes to drones. If I want a really deep sound, then I might use something as simple as a single sine wave for the bottom, but then layer more harmonically complex stuff on top (being sure to EQ the bass out!).
I also love granular synthesis for drone sounds. Synchronous granular synthesis will produce a very clear pitch dependant on the frequency of the grains, so this can work well for drones. BT did some great granular drones on Twisted Textures, you should check that out.

i think i remember someothing from not long after i joined, but yeah i reckon judgin by the stuff you do with latex the stuff you do with sound should be interesting

Thank's for the vote of confidence.vurt wrote:i think i remember someothing from not long after i joined, but yeah i reckon judgin by the stuff you do with latex the stuff you do with sound should be interesting
Nope. I did however score a low budget horror movie, that a friend of mine directed, a horror workout video and an episode of "Tales from the Darkside", that another friend directed. Other than that, film scoring doesn't really interest me much other than perhaps a project that I would produce/direct myself. I prefer having music as a hobby and realize that I don't want to associate the stress and bullshit, inherent in the film industry, with making music because I would start HATING it like I do my day job.vurt wrote:unless of course you wrote the tunes for buffy
