Jon Brion. Mainly because hes a proper producer and not a beat maker. He can go from producing Kanye west's new album to producing fiona apple and making both sound fan frickin tastic..

"a proper beat maker"? I think Jon Brion would get just as big a kick out of that as I did, hell I think most musicians would.

Pete Rock is way ahead for me, maybe not so much these days, but he used to make beats that sounded more like music than just a few cool samples stitched together, he has 'style', undeniable, i see madlib doing that today, but not quite the same.

Premier has always banged more than rock, he just builds those perfect headnod loops, man's too cool, but it doesnt have the same aura, sometimes hasn't got mood, or atmosphere, kinda like what rza did, never liked very much his beats, but he had that strange vibe about them that set them apart

Also i'd say Erick Sermon, he did some classic stuff, funky and phat, his music track, the one with the marvin gaye sample in the chorus, that's pretty sweet, minimal maybe but so cool.

And i'd also give a nod to the beatminerz since that's the sound that i call hiphop and it seemed to me nobody had mentioned them.

I'm also standing down with the let's not bash lil'jon click, i mean, that's not hiphop to me, i like the ny boom bap, it's just a whole different genre, but some of those tracks do indeed sound quite infectious.
je n'ai pas besoin de copier.

Chad & Pherell are great Swiss beats is good and jurassic cant be beat for pure style. I do like some of what fifty does as well i must admit. but im like old school when making R&B was popular and not some poor sampled track with garbage raped over it. I dont know why but I miss the days when you could see the ppl behind the music and not just hear it being sampled. I say it must be a crime not to see african american musicians on stage playing instruments, when they did appear on stage we got jimmy hendrix, stevie wonder, nat king cole, duke ellington,TS monk, EWF , Con Funk shun even lol the Delfonics, the Stairsteps even. but now all we get is a cheap sample and a wanna be singer who steals all the glory.
