ross g, I used to roadie for this guy called Ken Davis who does "health and relaxation" music. He made a very good living from performing at shopping centres and selling cassettes. I would set up his 17 synths [yes, 17] on three huge racks, he would play whilst his missus sold the stuff. It was amazing how well it went and he made a comfortable living from it. Then he got distribution and now he drives a Roller.
So I think that however well you might do from 'net sales, you will always do better if you do it properly.

"Indie" means "Independent", right?

I think if you want that designation, you should be financing your production yourself, and YOU should decide who gets what percentage of what. Unrealistic? It only costs a couple grand to get a nice production run once you've got your master. Getting that master is easier than ever too.

If you want someone else to be responsible for your production, and if you want to do it with someone else's money, and you are willing to accept that someone else will decide the value of your role in your art -- you are no longer "Indie". You are the exact opposite.

Good distribution is the key. The rest you should be able to do on your own.

It's easy to talk about, but a bit harder to implement ;)
