Best way to get Guitar Lead/Guitar Solo sound

I've been trying to get a lead guitar sound (ala Prince on Purple Rain solos or Pink Floyd guitar lead and solo on Compfortably Numb) but not quite there. I am looking at this purely from a software track as I have no Electric guitar. I currently have Slayer 2, but the lead presets seemed to be more geared toward metal and thrash kinda sound. I've tried to tweak them but since I don't know guitar amp/effect basics I wasted alot of time turning knobs. I've heard some good samples that fit the bill out of Sonik Synth's guitar banks, but before I shell out $300+ I'd like to explore other avenues.
Can someone give tips or give their setup for getting that high guitar lead sound? Or point me in the right direction regarding fiddling with the amp/effects?
A thanks in advance.

If you've got a loop I could record a real guitar and improv over the top of it. Depends how fast the song is though, not terribly good at doing death metal style solo's

I think Green Machine might work:
http://www.greenmachine.pwuq.net/
It costs $89.
To get an even "bigger" sound, use with Sonitus' reverb ($49):

Hi
Have you seen ManyGuitar?
I made it and I Love Pink Floyd!!
Will do what you ask and will be $89.99 when released in October.
See the thread and the Sneak peak here:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 43&start=0
and
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 44&start=0
These above 2 threads have alot of details about the product!
Also on our website in the ManyStation demos there is a song called Freehand Jam that sort of features a Pink Floyd style clean guitar. Here it is:
http://www.manytone.com/music/MTStation ... dJam01.MP3
That is just a start though as that song does not even have an amp sim on it! It may though give you a taste untill we release more Demos for ManyGuitar. The Amp sim in ManyGuitar is killer on our Guitar and Bass Samples. With that and the built in Delay / Echo and FX you will be set for Pink Floyd Heaven as well as many other styles. It also comes with over a Gig of 24 bit Guitar and Bass samples and will even load your own samples!

I used the BOSS GT-6 "Crying" patch on this (one of my contributions to the Cubase Blues Colaboration) - A few folks at Cubase.net thought it was very Gilmore-esque

he's not asking how to set up a guitar for playing, he wants to know how to use slayer or samples to create a solo, I'll watch this with interest....
Sorry I can't give you an answer, it's tough to program imo, that's why I will watch with interest, curiousity.

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Cyanogen, so far the Greenmachine example is the perfect one! That is the type of sound I'm looking for - especially this one http://www.greenmachine.pwuq.net/smooth_b.mp3
I will have to try out the demo when I get home.
Manytone, yes I did see that, but I hadn't seen examples of what ManyGuitar could do. Will definitely keep an eye out for it.
Thanks guys!

I knew you were looking for a software solution - but when you said "amp/effects" in the original post it opens the field to all comersJumboNewJack wrote:The example pj geerlings did with the BOSS is another example of the sound I'm looking for, but unfortunately that's hardware.
You could use the ManyTone clean samples out from your DAW into a GT6 or POD and then back in again. From time to time I read that people are using outboard equipment to get just the right sound from a VSTi.

Maybe try using a moog lead preset with lot's of resonance so that it's on the verge of feedback and some kind of preamp/tube amp/distortion for grit.JumboNewJack wrote:I've been trying to get a lead guitar sound (ala Prince on Purple Rain solos or Pink Floyd guitar lead and solo on Compfortably Numb) but not quite there. In Surfing the Solar Winds, I think I got some decent solo guitar sounds. On the main guitar solo, I used VintAudio Giga Electrics with some effects from Slayer 2.xx.
In the short hammer-ons, I used Slayer 2 with heavier distortion/feedback added.
In the future, I will probably use Lyrical Distortion 2, but I may still use the Slayer effects (on LD) for the heavy hammer-ons.
Oh, here is the link, should you be so inclined:
www.soundclick.com/jeffreynaness (the guitar solo is about 1/2 the way in).
