(slightly OT) eXT running on Fedora

Long weekend with at my folk's place and only a laptop to hand with Fedora linux on it...



The thing is, the GUI is really slow (though I can probably create an energyXT.ini via WINE and turn off antialiasing etc.)... however, the sounds are playing perfectly clear and quite fast. I'm using PlanetCCRMA's low latency audio kernels.

It's not the standalone running via WINE, but the VST itself via "vsthost", a small program that comes with the DSSI-VST source code.

Hoping to get eXT working in Rosegarden, and then I can use eXT to host other VSTs themselves.

... who knows, I may even make some music...

That's nice to know! I had a first not-too-good try in installing some ubuntu-Debian-version of Linux, but as this works, I'll ask a friend to try it again in some weeks. Rosegarden for example didn't work at all on my machine some weeks ago.

Klemperer: easiest way, I think, is to get a hold of Fedora. Then, you can use planetCCRMA (do a google for "CCRMA"), which basically updates your system with a low-latency audio setup and provides pre-compiled packages including rosegarden.

Hehe, using eXT as an instrument rack for MUSE. Seems that when you use "vsthost" to load energyXT.dll, it makes it available as a MIDI device to hosts like MUSE and Rosegarden. As easy as adding a track and pointing it to eXT.

Sadly, after about 2 instruments, it became to slow and choppy. Was fun while it lasted though. Looking forward to putting XP on this machine next week and using eXT at more 'native' speeds.

Ah, thanks you told me. The friend who installed Linux on my laptop had used Debian for years and doesn't seem to know Fedora.
At least I'll try it again sometimes, so thanks for the tips. After de-installing Linux I filled my laptop with self-recorded samples, so I wouldn't even have space for Linux now until I'll make something out of them:lol: .

Hi all,

I'm a new KVR member and also new to eXT, since everytime I tried getting it to run under Linux/Wine I failed to get acceptable results (crashed, too slow etc).

However, this thread inspired me to try something new today, and, what can I say, it seems to run very nicely! Wohoo!

This might get a little long, my apologies in advance.

I'm running a (not so up-to-date) Debian Sid with a fairly ancient Wine (20040716). Everything runs from a fake Windows drive, not from a full Windows installation.

What works for me:

eXT 1.3.5
Wine 20040716
SaviHost 1.21 (http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1290.html)

SaviHost is a little windows program that only hosts one VST. Since we can't use the standalone eXT under Wine, this seems to be a nice host if you just want to run eXT.

So, according to the SaviHost readme, I created a folder for SaviHost under my fake Windows installation, put the VST effect version of eXT, energyXTE.dll, into the same folder, and renamed the SaviHost EXE to energyXTE.exe.

Furthermore I made two edits to the config files:


1. in the wine config file (~.wine/config) I added:

;SAVIHost EnergyXTE
[AppDefaults\\energyXTE.exe\\x11drv]
"Desktop" = "1152x816"

This means, wine will open a fixed width window of 1152 x 816 pixels (adjust those to sensible values for your desktop), which will host all further windows from SaviHost and eXT. It may work without this setting, but I have yet to test other wine window manager options.


2. in the eXT config file <your-windows-folder>/energyXT.ini I added:

[Layout]
Skin=C:\Sound\Ext\skins\1128_XP_silver1c.gui
MenuOpaque=100
PartDetail=100
aalines=0
gui=GDI

(Adjust path to your eXT skin).


Now, from a shell, I changed to the SaviHost directory and started everything with

$ wine energyXTE.exe

Voila!

I found the key to my success was to setting "gui=GDI". With the default dib setting eXT got painfully slow.

So, maybe I could help some of you fellow Linux users with those hints. Beware, though, that I don't know anything really about eXT yet, so others with more experience should be able to test this setup more thoroughly than me.

Now please excuse me, I have an exciting new audio application to test. This will be a long night...

You know, if there was a LINUX version of eXT that was on par with the Windoze version I would seriously consider switching both hosts and OS's on a permanent basis. It woulod be the perfect way to have a super-streamlined set-up as a dual-boot.

I think jorgen said at one time that he was considering producing a Linux version of eXT.

So, Im not the only one wanting a binary (no compiling needed) linux verison then?

me too. only problem being that vst compatibility wouldn't be good enough .. not to mention vst speed ...

vst should have been designed as an platform independent standard ;)

well, i wouldn't say i'm "waiting" for it .. but it would be nice to be able to ditch windows for good. only thing that's always pulled me back to it is the multitude of really great windows-only vst:s

though, if ext would be compiled to linux, it could spee d up the development to native plugs ..

could well be i didn't use correct terminology, since i'm no coder, but what i ment was that the same plugs (same files) could be used cross-platform ..

i know that this would be a pretty much completely different concept .. just dreaming here .. =)

just curious, what makes it interesting for you ?
and then, from what point of view , dev or user ?

i couldn't be convinced yet to use linux for more than a few weeks , uninstall it and then again a month later or so - mainly because there are just too many options for windows out there where on linux you need to search hard for any applications (eXT might change this surely )

Would be great great great.........as you can find (almost) anything equivalent to a Windows app when you're working with Linux............
