When I broke up with my first long-term girlfriend, I played "Explode and Make Up" by Sugar over and over again.
Cant beat a bit of Bob Mould for heart-wrenching angst.
Other than that, Honey's Dead or Pyschocandy by the Jesus & Mary Chain at full volume. Always does the trick

The Cure's 'Apart'.
My number one favorite bust-up song.

The dictionary is your friendCol.G wrote:What does cathartic mean?
cathartic
adj 1: emotionally purging [syn: psychotherapeutic] 2: emotionally purging (of e.g. art) [syn: releasing] 3: strongly laxative [syn: evacuant, purgative] n : a purging medicine; stimulates evacuation of the bowels [syn: purgative, physic, aperient]
I would go with definitions 1 & 2

cathartic = something which puts through the emotional gamut, but makes you feel all the better for it - "cleansed, purged"
kind of like a violent laxative for the heart and soul...

Actually..it really depends which polarity of Catharsis you're after..
"Apart" will make you damn near suicidal, but if you're looking for a purging effect in line with taking a good crap, I'd have to recommend something like Q.O.T.S.A's 'Broken Box'..
excerpt:
"In my head you're all brand new
Tell your new boy where I came
In my head you're all brand new
Take that broken pussy elsewhere"

Alice Cooper's "Roses on White Lace" for not-so-happy breakups.
(though it's not exactly about breaking up with someone...it can definitely seem to fit the mood when you come out of the heartbroken phase into the inevitable royally-pissed-off phase)
Todd Rundgren's "Can We Still Be Friends" for more amicable ones.

When me & our lass broke up (years ago) I played a lot of stuff by the smiths (great for when your depressed & pissed to sing along to in a mournful voice - y'know 'over the moors, take me to the moors, dig a shallow grave & i'll lay me down' etc) - the smiths cheers me up in a weird kind of way.
Played a lot of portisheads first lp, just released then, especially that song 'roads', alice in chains was good when I was angry & a few songs by the cranberries.

Dunno if its necessarily massively helpful, but Break ups to Makeups by Method Man is a quality breakup tune. Its quite bizarre, cos the verses involve Method Man saying how he couldn't give a monkeys about his ex, and the chorus contains a sample from some other tune which says 'I still love you baby...' Anyways, I recommend checking it out - I don't really listen to much of the rest of the album, but I stick that tune on from time to time - in fact, I think I shall do so right now...
