I'll tell you a little trick of mine for metalic percussion sounds:

- Take a regular percussion hit, a snare say

- Send about 30% to a filter bank

- Experiment with the frequencies and bandwidths of the filters

You will find that the filters bring out similar formants that you'd find in a metalic hit. Trust me this works a charm, I made a load hits this way using some vinyl snares and GRMTools Reson.

sonata produces some crazy metal-strike sounds. The resonant chambers are perfect for the task. (all synthesis, no samples though).
