Hi, and thanks for all of the great work on the various sounds and sample sets you all make.
Fantastic stuff.
I'm new to using string sounds, and I was wondering if you're familiar with the Cello and Violin string sounds that are in the Orchestra Factory sound set...
In particular, I really like the ones, I think they're called 'harmlonic,' and 'arco,' where you can hear the sound of the bow rasping or the strings rasping, and a lot of 'air,' in the sample...
Do you know what sounds or sample sets I should be looking for to get more sounds like those?
Do I need to be more specific?
I'm about to invest in some more string sounds, and any guidance you can give me would be great.

Hi alabamian
do you need strings as a Reason Refill, or do you also have other sample players?
IMHO, a great bang for the buck is Philharmonik, lots of strings and the whole rest of the orchestra comes with it.
If you like strings-only, you can take a look at this ExpansionTank
http://www.esoundz.com/details/viewDeta ... ductID=236
And there's this Reason refill for symphonic sounds
http://www.esoundz.com/details/viewDeta ... ductID=178
cheers

I really like the Orchester Refill which is included with Reason. I created this track with it: http://melodiefabriek.nl/audio/mp3/Melo ... g_Snow.mp3
Kind regards,

Well, I also have Cubase SX 3, but I find I use Reason more often as its so easy to get up and runnning and find inspirational sounds... I also like how easy it is to tweak...
When I get nearly done with a composition I'll rewire Reason to Cubase to use some of the Cubase's effects... I have Pristine Space and the Waves bundle.
I was hoping just for more string sounds, but it looks like I'm going to have to get a complete orchestra... I guess I could get the Halion Strings 2, but I'm worried, because I don't need the traditional strings as much, rather the sort of raspy ones... I like the string samples with lots of grit and character, though I know they might be less useful to someone wanting to write a traditional score...
Thanks for all of the suggestions.
Perhaps I should've mentioned that I'm already aware of the Philharmonik, the Strings that come with Kontact, the Halion Strings 2, and GPO... but like I said, all those seem like over kill just to get some new raspy strings....
But the introductory price on philharmonik sure does seem tempting.
Thanks again.

Have you listend to the Symphony String samples? It is one of the ExpansionTanks and comes with ST2LE. Or if you don't need ST2LE, you get the option to purchase just the sounds for $10 less.
You'll have lots of string patches there and they should do for many pieces of modern music. They are not the same thing as a classical string library and it seems, you don't want that anyway.

We did some of the sounds for Reason 3's factory bank, but not too many orchestral. If you like the string sounds of the factory bank, Props has a whole strings refill you might want to check out.
We have a refill called "Symphonic" which is not bad for the money but it is more of a "taster" with a variety for cheap than what I would call a more "pro" orchestra (such as Philharmonik). But, we ARE going to be announcing very soon a full on PRO orchestra for Reason it just so happens. So, stay tuned. I think we're announcing it next month!

Squids! Great news about the orchestra for Reason. I'll hang on and wait for that.
I already have the Strings Refill from the Props themselves, and overall, I thought that the sounds that came with Reason 3 were better than the Strings Refill.
I was a little disappointed.
Thanks for chiming in on this thread, and thanks to everyone else's suggestions as well.
I'm way out here in the boondocks of Alabama, so can't try out these sound sets myself, I just have to rely on the demos and the good word from you guys.
Squids, any idea how much the Reason sound set is going to cost, or should I just wait a month to find out?
Thanks
scott.
oh, and if anyone wants to hear the sorts of ambient things I make, you can check out my music on www.7161.com with the artist name : victrola...
simple ambient stuff

No official word on the orchestral refill prices but they will be a little more high end priced (but still affordable). Can't say too much about them yet, but I will say that one of them even has orchestral performance stuff for films. It is a multiple volume thing. Been working on it for a while.
