Okay........so ive spent the last 2-3 hours jackin with chains of VST's and amps and such trying to see what nifty new high gain, distorted, overdriven sounds i could pop out, when i decided to see what it would take to get the tone of a real high gain amp. so another hour or so later i came up with some great stuff but i dunno, i would like to be able to compare to some guitar players who know a bit more about good tones and such than i do, ive only played for about 2 years now so im not all that great.
So anyone this is just open for anyone to post not neccessarily audio clips (but if you want feal free
) but more along the lines of what plugins you used and what settings/presets for each plugin and such. i found that most of my favorite settings usually started with a gate, and of course the JCM900 and then Izotopes Trash with just box models. and then various addons from there lol. So lemme see what you guys got. We all know VST amp sims cant correctly emulate a real tube amp at high gains, cause ive read it in about every thread concerning VST amp sims ever made. But just for kicks i would like to see what sweet settings and shit you guys have come up with for higher gain sounds............so uhhh .......lemme have em
haha

I wish there was a standardised VST chain file format. It's very often that I construct new effects with a couple of plugins working in tandem. Hearing about Live 5's saving groupings of plugins excited me - but I didn't realise (and couldn't understand why) it didn't support normal VST's.
Thank the lord for EnergyXT. Anyway, I might post some of my simanalog chains when I get home.

OK, well heres a sweet one i made last night while..........i was pretty tired so maybe it sucks and i just didnt realise hahah
k well i always use Green Gate at the start of my chain and set it to about the 6th dot on the Gate knob
Then go into a JCM900 and turn it to the high gain channel and then turn that channels reverb to around 6
then go into Izotope's Trash and turn everything off but the box models and set it to "Amp - Oakdale Modified" with a dynamic mic, at 0.4 seperation and spread all the way up. i usually set the input gain to like 2.4 or so but that kind of stuff you can mess with to make it sound best with your hardware obviously.
and there you have it. now if you want a little extra boost i did throw FrettedSynths new DriveStomp box before the JCM900 and messed with that and got some pretty sweet sounds too, but thats optional obviously..........alright well try that one out and tell me what you think

Instead of using the drive stomp box, add another instance of Trash, before the JCM900. Use the Zoned B preset and turn off box model. You might have to adjust the gain in either the 1st instance of Trash or the JCM as the signal is pretty hot. Zoned A works well but I find it a bit noisier. I find the Zoned presets on Trash much better than the Boss Metal Zone in which they are modelled after. I've done some A/B testing and you have much better control with Trash models than I do with actual pedal, but then I don't have any noise reduction when I use the pedal. Been thinking of getting the Boss NS-2 but then its not really needed if I go the full VST route. There are also some Pro-Rat settings that should give a good sound using the JCM and Trash box models but haven't had a chance to try that out yet.

One I've been using that sounds great is a Guitar Rig rack I came up with this weekend;

Shut off the distortion box for "cleaner" crunch rhythm tones. You'll notice the "Variax" is turned up a bit (125 modeled volts instead of 117), and I'm using cutdown 4x12 cabs in stereo.GR lets you alter the cab size- when you do, it alters the speaker size as well. Running 20% smaller as I am gives me a 4x10 cab- punchier on the high end with not quite as much rumble on the bottom. There's a stereo delay at the bottom of the chain that you can't see- I fade it in and out with a pedal.

Hi guys,
please post some audio quickies. Just for the impression. Thanx a lot. I want to experiment some later, too.
Best wishes, FRitz

That trash one is cool but it has a really loud whine sound in it that really bothers me that my gate cant seem to calm down lol. I wish i could figure out what causes this.
The guitar rig one is good, ive made several along these lines and i really like to use it with the Demon stomp box. really good stuff.
Anyone got any other good ideas?
