Hey :)

My father has decided to surrender to the digital revolution and buy himself a personal mp3 player.
He needs to convert cd,s etc. to mp3 format.
Unfortunately he lives in India or i,d do it for him in Cubase.
Is there an easy to use freeware app?
Preferably something which allows sample rate and bit rate choice.

Or should he just get an ipod and use itunes for this purpose?
Any other suggestions for good Mp3 players?

All suggestions will be rewarded with a free magnum of alcohol free champagne , a bucket of broccoli and a beta max copy of Debbie does Dallas.

Cheers
Funk

I just googled "sourceforge lame" but it returns "is not an MP3 encoder". What's the full story on this?
My MusicCalc is temporary offline.

it's just a geeky recursive acronym:
LAME is not An Mp3 Encoder
such as
GNU is Not Unix
KDE Desktop Environment
MINT is Not Tos (pretty oldschool, isn't it :hihi: )

BTW: Lame is THE #1 free MP3 encoder

... i use the FREE audiograbber, which handles *.ogg files too :

Even Windows Media Player does "ripping" (= CD to mp3)

iTunes is without a doubt the easiest solution. Quality is decent but not great.

The best solution is EAC (for ripping) and LAME (for encoding), but tbh this is quite complex for the average casual user. Personally I wouldn't suggest this to my dad, but maybe your father is more computer literate...

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! :)

Windows Media Player won't rip to mp3 - only to wma.

well I think CDex is pretty easy to use

and does a good work for using music on a mp3 player.
sound is vibration, vibration is life

Thanks again :)

He,s intending to convert a lot of audio book/motivational type crap as well as music
Does a player like the ipod have a maximum file length?

Do you think something like the ipod mini would be a good choice?

He,s a Civil and structural engineer yet not very computer literate(a bit like me really) so something like the ipod with its included software would simplify the process for him.
Any comments or alternative suggestions?

Cheers,
Funk

Wrong - I just doublechecked.

It will encode mp3 but only at a very low bit rate. To encode mp3 at 128kbs or higher you have to purchase an mp3 encoder codec for Windows Media Player. Microsoft is too cheap to pay the licensing fee for everyone, plus they want to promote wma as a standard.

Mine does 128-320 kbps (Windows Media Player 10)
