Single cycle synthesizer waves

Btw, michat, do you really think that those single cycle waveforms are sounding all that different (regardless of what you'll be using them in)?
From my experience, especially when it comes to anything analog (or analog emulation), it's usually the way the sound is developing over a certain amount of time, something that simply won't be captured by a single cycle. Those often seem to sound very similar to my ears, so I rather create my single waveforms from digital (read: VSTi or whatever) sources, instead of bothering with the hassles of sampling anything else.

I've sampled multiple notes but they're not edited. I've done a few though and edited them onto my Akai S5000 - these were origianlly done for Hollowsun, and I converted them to soundfonts and stuck them onto SF2MIDI...Sascha Franck wrote:Are those SY85 waveforms multimapped?
I was thinking about sampling mine as well, but couldn't be bothered yet.

Yes, the single cycle wave form is the raw material, its the onboard effects found on a sampler or synth which do everything else. There are some things samplers can do and can't do. You can't replicate a synth based on static samples. But, you can use the samples as a building block to create a new synth whith outboard gear. If you got the synth why not play it, whatever problem you have will be the same whith the samples anyway. The pitch, is the most important element in regards to sampling and selling sample libraries.

Yes, they do! And i don´t use them in a sampler to get the original sound, i use them with my selfmade reaktor-synthesizer-patches. right now i´m buildin some kind of vector-synthesis synth with 4 oscillators and fm with feedback. doesn´t sound like a wavestation, but this wasn´t my aim actually. i don´t want to imitate sounds but to get new stuff to use in my music. so the single cycle waves are just the base, after that u have fm, feedback, filters and audible vector synthesis. resulting from that u have totally new sounds.Sascha Franck wrote:Btw, michat, do you really think that those single cycle waveforms are sounding all that different (regardless of what you'll be using them in)?

Addition: i normally prefer natural sounds for my (smooth chilled) music, so i prefer "sounds developing over a certain amount of time", but with filters and fx u can make a soundscape that also carries u from one point over several other interesting points to another. In synthesizers like wavestation, m1, sy-series, it is just the fx section that makes the sound. i own a sy99, which has a "FX bypass"-button. if the fx are off, the sound is just crap!

Is there anyone who could help me with jd-800 sounds?

Okay, I've uploaded the SY85 raw WAV's: edited multisampes, some un-edited samples, and some samples from a Roland D50 which I've somehow found on a long lost CD...
Hope these are so some use!

I might do some Kontakt patches out of them - if you don't mind I'll post them once they're done.

BONES homepage has also a lot of nice single cycle waveforms.

Nope - don't mind at all! I may upload my Akai S5000 progs too, incase anyone is interested? They were originally on Hollowsun before it closed it's free download service.Oh yes, nice one!

Beyond samplers, single-cycle waveforms are great for other kinds of synths as well. For example Image-Line's Sytrus takes single-cycle waveforms as input for its additive oscillators (yes I know it's FM, but it has limited additive capabilities as well). I've been able to get some seriously cool textures by using waveforms as the starting point for various patches, or "warming" up presets which use more digital-sounding waveforms (like the built-in sytrus ones).

Hey Winegums, those are indeed VERY useful!
I'd love getting ahold of your AKP programs, but in the long run I'll rather add loop points to the waves - allready started, quite something of a labor intensive job... but probably worth the effort because after this one should be able to slap them into whichever sampler of choice and they should just loop fine.
I'll keep you informed about how things go along.

Btw, the good thing about the SY waves: You can easily spot the looppoints used internally, so all one has to do is to recreate them and store the markers inside the file.

Thanks(!), a friend of mine had a D50, but he had to sell it, so they are of use.winegums100 wrote:Okay, I've uploaded the SY85 raw WAV's: edited multisampes, some un-edited samples, and some samples from a Roland D50 which I've somehow found on a long lost CD...
