Are there tools for "painting sounds" or converting
sounds into images you can recommend. I just found
some simple things, with a very low resolution creating
more artefacts than I want ...
Thanks, RS

What are the differences between this and Metasynth?

Try Doppelmangler - you can load .BMP files and it converts them into a sound spectrum.

Cameleon supports analysis of WAV files. You can then export to BMP and edit the image in any editor you like, and then reimport the BMP. You also have separate control of the noise and harmonic components - one image represents noise and another the harmonic spectrum. One thing - I would like to load a WAV, paint in it and save it. Coagula on first sight doesn't support WAV loading
Metasynth offers more control in many respects. For example, Metasynth allows you to define whichever Y-axis scaling you wish. What are the differences between this and Metasynth?

Tried Atomgen now ... which isn't cheap, as you stated, but has some nice
features. WNAdditive and Doppelmangler look very complex, without focussing
on "music painting" capabilities, which is a must in my opinion.
Coagula with sound import would be the perfect solution

Forget Atmogen, its shite. My advice is to run Metasynth under a Mac emulator. Its not problem free, but atleast you get the real deal.
Coagula is great through, especially for a freebie.
