What's up ya'll?

This is my first thread.

I'm new to the KVR forums, and I have to say, I enjoy the work ya'll do around here.

So keep up the good work!

With that being said, let me cut to the chase.

Here's the deal: I'm a new Producer/Composer/DJ (and potential Exec) who's looking to help out some Artists/Bands (Mostly Hip-Hop/Rock/Jazz) in my area.

I'm going to be creating Productions/Compositions for Artists/Bands to use as well as deal with Artist/Band development, Promotion, and Management.

But here's the thing: I'd like to do devote all that I can to this effort and I want to maintain legal ownership and rights to any and all Masters (productions/compositions) that I create.

Recently, a few people from my area have been ripped off when, after producing tracks for people, their Productions ended up being used without their permission in a song that was recorded over and used unlawfully by Artists and made its way onto a local radio station.

Now as shady as that was, I understand that the Producers in particular have little options on the table, due to his lack of a formal copyright on his intellectual property.

I have the utmost respect and faith in the Artists/Bands that I'm going to produce for, but I'd like to convey an atmosphere of professionalism and avoid potential consequences by having to deal with the same drama my friends encountered.

Also, if anyone knows a great way of obtaining information about Clearing Samples, Starting a Record Label, great locations for Free Music Contracts or Contract Resources, doing Covers on Preexisting Music, Tips on Production/Composition techniques, the Best way to get Promotion (Free or otherwise) and Inside Tips and or your experiences in the "The Industry," or with any other Musical Endeavor, feel free to post on this thread or PM me.

So in closing, any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

A.J. 8)

Sweet- that sounds really great- you mean for you to produce me I just need to give away 100% of my rights to the music?

lol. No. I'm talking about for my productions. The beats themselves. Not for the entire song after it's finished. Unless I get rights to that as well(?).
I'm willing to work with people for free if that's what it takes, but for anything I produce (namely the "beat" not the vocals), I want to keep rights to it.

But as far as owning all rights, rights would be shared amongst all relevant parties (Producer, Artists/Bands, Record Labels, etc.) I'm mostly asking about how could I obtain those rights. Obviously the parties involved would have rights too.

The main reason I brought up rights was to avoid the entire issue of what my friend went through.

But come on now, I even gave examples of what I meant when I talked about the other producers who had their productions stolen, only to have other people record over the production and put it on the radio. lol. :P

Anyway...

Sac town... Mostly Northern California though. I'm slated to work with a few Hip-Hop artists from the Bay Area in October.

Get an entertainment attorney where you live who'll let you hire him for an hour or two as a consultant and take him all your questions on a list. Really.
