Never Seen This is Sonar 4 before .. Few Other related Q's

I posted this in the Cakewalk Sonar forums with no luck. Maybe the KVRians' vastly better knowledge will help.

Ok , I've been using Sonar for a very good while now. Sonar 2 is where I started but never got into it , Sonar 3 I used for a short while before upgrading to Sonar 4 Producer.

I recently tried out Acid and fell in love with their paintbrush and draw tools. Where you can record audio and then use the tool to quickly arrange the different recorded parts , replicate them with ease and speed , and otherwise. However Acid is complete crap compared to Sonar in most other aspects.

I have never looked before really but are their similar functions in Sonar 4 Producer Edition that do this sort of thing ? It would be lovely not to have to manually copy and paste , enter a number for how many times , drag and drop tons of stuff , or otherwise in Sonar to do the same thing.

ALSO what the deuce are these indented areas in this screenshot from the tutorials. No matter how many times I have recorded full songs in sonar I have NEVER seen them in my own tracks. It's enigmatic to me... I know that sounds completely noobish , but I really havent lol (i need to start reading manuals one day) ..

Also are there any functions for the piano roll that helps with patterns that I may be overlooking.

my main problem right now is simply arrangment and recording stuff. I want to be able to arrange things out easier without killing my work flow.

CTRL-L is your friend :)

Select a clip, press CTRL-L (which turns it into a groove clip...or an Acidised wave if you like) and then you will be able to drag repetitions out by clicking on the right hand edge of the clip in a similar way to how Acid does it...

This works for midi and audio clips...

Post

Oh f**k yes thankyou ! I've been wondering about that and being pointed in all the wrong directions.

What do you mean, 'indented areas'? You got me curious.

I don't see anything out of the ordinary in that screen shot -- using Sonar 4 SE here.

He means the audio tracks with rounded ends and little "toothbites" all along them I think. Even though I don't use Sonar myself I know from having given it a lot of attention when considering alternative hosts, that they do this when converted to groove clips as described above - the rounded end develops when the track is converted to distinguish it from an ordinary audio or midi track and the indentations appear when the track is painted out. So pleasingly the same answer applies to both his questions. Neat eh? :)

Ha, ha! That was nifty, aMUSEd.

Surprising that you (Daviencrow) didn't know about groove clips. They are awesome. And the new(er) midi groove clips - added later. They speed up work flow alot.

Also, in regards to:
record audio and then use the tool to quickly arrange the different recorded parts , replicate them with ease and speed
P5v2 is great for this. Using the Groove Matrix you can arrange, re-arrange many different possibilities for your clips. You might wanna check it out.

Post

Yeah I am using P5 v2 myself. The only thing that stops me using it more is the annoying fact that you can't have more than one audio in running at a time. I might take a look at the Home studio upgrade though (assuming it DOES allow you to use more than one audio in/out) - looks pretty powerful - I don't need all the extras that come with Sonar (have useable or better equivalents for all of them anyway)

Yeah I'm suprised too. I have an arse backwards way of learning things by screwing with them instead of reading manuals :hihi: .. Up until now I wouldn't of had use for grooveclips. Sonar just has some features they should flaunt more >.<

I've been trying to get the project5 2 demo for some time (because of similar reasons) , but cakewalks site wont work for anyone I know when they try to download it. They get an FTP error or file does not exist error. Currently I use Fruity Loops for it's piano roll and it's nifty browser (amongst other things + its price) .. But FL doesnt have the ability to record an audio source.

So really what I need to know now is if Project 5 allows you to record the audio and arrange it with the groove clips in a simple way .. and how that is done.

And just so im sure , you can turn recorded audio into groove clips using the Ctrl+L functions right ?

I want to eliminate the need to switch between but so many screens (or programs) and the need to do things the long way ...

You see when I'm writing a song I dont want to have to stop to record certain things or arrange certain things in an untimely manner to accomodate changes while im writing parts ... It REALLY kills my creative flow and has ruined some ideas and moods that could of resulted in magnificant songs.

You can record audio using FL Studio. Just use the mixer.

And yes groove clips work in a similar way to Sonar in Pro 5 v2.

If you already have Sonar there is plenty you can do without needing P52. Theres a huge amount to learn in Sonar too so getting P52 right now might not be wise.

An hour with the help file will teach you so much. Check out the mute tool. Its very handy sometimes.

I'm not unfamilliar with Sonar , I have been using it for some time. But I sometimes think there should be a better way of doing something in the program or that it should have something similar to another host (like in this case). Sometimes I just don't know what to look up if you know what I mean. I think it will take me longer to get used to being able to do much with a host automatically that I would normally do manually than it did to learn what I have about recording in general :hihi:

I DO HOWEVER have one more question , maybe somone could answer. The only real broswer for samples , midi files , and other audio in Sonar is the Loop Explorer. It aggravates the piss out of me because there isnt a way to set up like Favorite Folders , Certain locations , or to Dock it.

Is there another broswer like that in Sonar that I'm not seeing ?

Actually doesn't session drummer do something similar to that ? But it's only midi ... hmm

No there isn't. P5 has these facilities, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them appear in Sonar 5...not that that helps with Sonar 4 :)
