my school runs sebelius three, and in my music course im quite distracted by the extremely lame midi instruments. i have some nice soundfonts, and im sure i could get some nicer ones, (like sonic implants GM through school) but im just not sure how youd go about changing the way the computer plays the midi. id like to change it at home as well. but what exactly do i do??? im guessing you can, since sonic implants sell 'better' GM librarys etc.

any help appreciated

oh, and my teacher has no idea how to do it, he said its up to me, lol.

More info please:

1) Mac or Windows?
(If mac, then alas I can't be of any help; maybe somebody else will jump in)

2) Is it played by the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, or by a sound card? For the answer, first look in the options of Sebelius to what device the notes are sent. Also have a look in the Windows Control Panel: sounds & audio devices. The "audio" tab states what the default midi device is.

If we're talking 'bout the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth (standard in Windows XP) there was a file sample format very alike SF2 it can load. Forgot how it was called, and how to load it. Actually you could do a lot worse than these standard Roland SoundCanvas sounds.

3) If answer 2 is not the MS thingy, then what type of soundcard?
If it is a Creative Soundblaster, you can load soundfonts!!

C00kie, i run windows at home, and both mac and windows at school, but i only use the pcs, so thats fine.
ummm, the midi comes out of the GS wavetable synth and not the soundcard (for both home and school, so i guess ill do the same thing)...

so if the above is the case you dont know how to do anything with changing it? have you heard of any converters from that old sample format close to SF2 you speak of, vonverting SF2 into that?

my soundcard is a C-Media 'High definition media device'.

im not really sure how to fins out more about the changing of the midi, so if you can help any, much appreciatred.

Right... Your current sounds reside in the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drivers\GM.DLS, which is of the "DownLoadable Sounds" file format. This name suggests there are zillions of alternatives roaming on the net, but the format never really took off.

Awave Studio by FMJSoft can convert SF2 files to DLS files.

There doesn't seems to be a proper way to tell Windows (or actually DirectX) to use another DLS file, at least I don't know how to. I've read of somebody who just renamed the GM.DLS and replaced it with his own.
