Makes a great t-shirt as well. :hihi:

God, it took me around 10 years from first hearing them to finally get into them. But it sure is worth it.

Until yesterday I had no idea that it was a VU song. Finding out that it was written by Lou Reed was a bigger shock than first hearing Heroine. :-o

Can I be a real geek and throw 'EVOL' and 'Bad Moon Rising' into the mix?

DDN was my first SY album (got it and DinoJrs 'Bug' on the same day in late '88... a pretty pivotal day... :)) I was just obsessed with SY from then on but only had the earlier albums to investigate so I guess they've stuck with me more than the later stuff. Tunes like 'Expressway to yr skull' and 'Death Valley 69' make them both indispensible.

However, 'Sister' would be the album I'd choose in a gun/head decision. Noise + Pop.

I like Dirty a lot too, their 'grunge' album and hated by a lot of diehards but I think it rocks (in all ways). 'Experimental, jetset, trash an no star' is excellent too.

Ok, on to solo albums & projects... ;)

Reed wrote a lot of awful tunes - just be thankful its not on any of the albums!!

@garyg - yeah, 'Expressway to yr skull' and 'Death Valley 69'. Got 'em doing an amazing version of expressway on the year that punk broke video.

Have you seen the video for Death Valley '69? Its directed by Richard Kern

My fave is "EVOL".

And yes, I adore the Velvet Underground too.

My personal favs :
- Washing Machine (the "Washing Machine" track contains one guitar note that contains itself the whole universe)
- Dirty - I know they consider it to be a "mistake" but it's soooo enjoyable
- Confusion is sex. The origins =).

I must state thus that you can hardly make a mistake with any album if you like the band.

They should have called it "Big Banging Machine".

I believe that Goo cover was done by Raymond Pettibone. He also did most of Black Flag's cover art. Hmm, I found one site that claims Pettibone is Greg (Black Flag, SST Records) Ginn's brother. Guess that makes sense considering the amount of art he did for them.

At one time Sonic Youth was one of the few bands whose new releases I would buy automatically, without even hearing them first. But, I lost track of them after Dirty.

If memory serves me correctly, the two guitarists of SY met while playing together in the Glenn Banca Ensemble. http://www.glennbranca.com/ I swear 1/2 of that contraption Glenn is playing was my first guitar, a Sears special.

Speaking of things I've lost touch with, whatever happened to college radio? I tune in now and then but it all sounds shit to me.

Indeed. At that time Glenn was doing "one very long note" performances. Which says it all :P
