hey guys, please help out if you can...

I just bought Cubase SL3 yesterday so that I may colaborate with a friend that uses Cubase SX3. I also purcahsed Reason 3 (love that program) which he also uses. The problem is...

- If I try to open a song with Rewire routing in SL3 (that was saved in SX3), I get the message "The following channels could not be connected and will now be removed" and then a list of all the ReWire channels. Basically I lose all ReWire channels.
- If I create a track and send it to him, he has no problems opening it at all, but as soon as he resaves again, I get the error described above.

So SX3 -> SL3 won't open ReWire channels
SL3 -> SX3 will open ReWire channels

I have tried 3.02 and 3.1 with no avail and I'm really starting to get worried, especially since I just payed half my fortnightly wages for that program and it wasn't even packaged properly.

Has anyone experieced the same thing ? Any workarounds ? I would be willing to edit the binary of my project file if that even helped but I just wouldn't know what to change lol :S

Please PLEASE help :)

Cheers

Hi ther,
I don't really know the best solution to your problem, and I guess a post on the cubase.net forum might get you better/faster help.

However, a workaround could be to save both the Cubase- and the Reason projects separately/independantly. This way you might be able to open them in SL3 too:
  • Create new project in SL3
  • Open the required number of Rewire channels from the devices list
  • Open Reason and load the Reason project file
Your friend could of course leave the MIDI tracks wich are routing to a Reason device in the cubase project and set the MIDI Out in the inspector to "Not connected". Since you have a Notepad on a "per track" basis, he could write a few words in there, telling you how to route them afterwards.

Another thought: have you looked at the number of Rewire channels opened by SL3? Maybe there's a mismatch?

Anyway, the offered workaround is always worth a try I guess. If it doesn't work this way, well, I have no other immediate ideas yet.

Hope this helps

hey Raphael, cheers for the response bud. Yep that's not a bad idea I guess, I think it's actually a bug but I was hoping to confirm it with anyone else here who may have encountered the problem. I have checked and the number of ReWire channels are identical to Cubase SX3 and labelled identically too. Tis quite a wierd one, I think I won't be able to collaborate with him because of this. The only other solution I can think of is saving all track settings and importing them after readding the ReWire channels. Quite a huge pain the butt to say the least.

I will admit that I do love cubase and find its workflow brilliant, but these sorta things really make me wish that I could get comfortable with Sonar.

i have also screwed around with Ableton Live+qBass, Reason+Sonar, Reason+Tracktion, Rebirth+Tracktion. i gotta tell ya, while i love the idea behind ReWire, it has NEVER felt good and easy :( you'd think with a "super easy" host like tracktion the ReWire implementation would be tip-top, but it's still kindof annoying even there :(
"open program A, open program B, open document A, open document B" OH WAIT you got the order wrong, now some program will complain to you about stuff! DOH!

Another thing is, make sure you really have the latest "Rewire.dll" (wich is 1.5.2.89 I think) in your "Windows\System32" folder.
Or maybe your mate is using some stuff/functions wich are not available in SL3? As Sleepy says, the idea behind Rewire is great, implementation isn't always optimal though. :?

Raphael hey man. Well I just installed Reason 3.04 so I assume the DLL should be cool although one can never really be sure with that bloody file lol :D Beautiful steinberg buggies :D yey

You rock man, thanks for ur help :D I'll look into the DLL thing anyways :D

SleepyP lol yeah man, you make a great point. To be honest, the main reason I love rewire is because it doesnt break the bank with Reason 3 being such great value and it runs a lot lower on the CPU than 100 VSTis. And, I must admit, I LOVE REASON !!! its way more stable than anything that Native Instruments has brought out to be honest. Sure it doesn't sound as good, but if you know what your doing, it works well..

I had tried tracktion and the ReWire routing in it is better than cubase :D but .... the rewire slaves tend to run like crap through it. I recommend Ableton Live for serious ReWire work, no doubt about it. It's the best implementation of Rewire i've ever seen !

Cheers mate, thanks for your feedback anyway
