FMHeaven (and presumably NI FM7) can play the original DX7 patch and can give you THAT piano exactly. It was the sound of the early '80's and numerous crap ballads. Apply a chorus (DX7 was mono) and you are ready to entertain toddlers with your nursery ryhmes.

worse sound is that bamboo flute sound that was in too many songs, like "sledgehammer", i was in a class and when any new students had it in a song every one would

That was the much beloved Emulator II shakuhachi sample which found it's way onto virtually every sampler to arrive on the scene there after.

Yep...that one got real boring, to be sure.

Slap bass has to be one of the most annoying pop sounds, that's for sure.

Personally, the one that used to harsh my mellow back in the 80s was those synthesized brass stabs invariably used by some flaccid pop bands trying to cop a funky Earth Wind & Fire vibe. And failing miserably.

The pain!

GODDAMMIT!

Everybody back off!

There's always a sound that's overdone due to it's popularity at the moment. . .

The leslie
The fuzz box
The Roland "steam" patch
The resonant Moog filter sweep of the 70's
Clean strat chorus
Roland TR/TB drum and bass sounds
Sitar in rock music
Extreme drum compression
Glorified biblical harmonies
That cheezy radio lo-fi vocal sound
That cheezy full dump highpass tarnce filter
The bit reduction "angst!" trash thrash
The "blown speaker" effect
The stutter/silence/stutter effect
the "tapestop/start" effect
The tuned down crunch guitar effect
The "sound like scritchy vinyl" effect

Hell, they're all cliches. The DX piano isn't any worse than the current fodder of choice. When the DX came out it was amazing. Spawned from the Dyno-My-Piano Rhodes era, we hadn't heard anything like it before. That "horrible" piano wasn't horrible then. No other synth could get anywhere close to that sound at the time. That's probably what led to it's demise, due to over use. Honestly, that DX piano was perfect for those cheezy-sappy love ballads of the era that we all love to hate, and hate with a passion now.
Still, if it weren't for that sugary piano sound and all the Pop hits that used it and popularized it, I believe that FM synthesis would have faded into oblivion.

Say what you want, but that Shakuchi patch sounds f**king awesome in Enigma's Sadness. That's one of my favorite patches of all time, I love it.

But the DX piano sucks, I hate most FM sounds.

I still think Dire Straits 'Brothers in Arms' album is the best showcase of a DX7 ever. The sounds were totally new at time, but are still breathtaking. Most people probably wouldn't even associate them with the cheesy DX7 sounds we are used to hearing.

Amen. That's what pop's about.
Can we start a 'techno-based music is the new supermarket music' angle as well?

Have you ever heard the lead sound from Foreigner's 'Waiting for a girl like you' ?

I haven't heard it for years, and still my soul doth shrivel at the very thought of it.
