a cubase user would miss/lose going to sonar?

sonar 5 looks tempting and i have NEVER considered a host change.

midi editing...?
automation....?
drum maps....?
work flow....?

anything that cubase does better and or more efficient?

i don't want to turn this into a "bug" thread because I do not suffer from any cubase bugs.

I would like some honest, knowledgeable opinions from people whoe REALLY know both platforms.

I like the idea of a dongle-free world.

thanks

Honestly, I have given Sonar so many tries, like REALLY a lot of times, I have sat down, started a new project and attempted to do what I do in Cubase. But I simply couldn't ... The workflow in Sonar doesn't seem right to me, for example ...

- VST / VSTi are sometimes surrounded by a larger window than is required.
- The meters in the mixer confuse me.... 0 db doesn't look like 0 db in Sonar at all :S
- There is no audio pool in Sonar, I mean, how on earth could anyone live without an audio pool ? lol This is basically a place to organise all recordings and video clips used in a track.
- Ummm default routing didn't work the way I expected. Tracks output to wierd things ....
- Track heights are a pain in the butt to work with in Sonar, everything is LARGE !
- Workflow is extremely clutterred, those icon menus shouldn't even be avilable, they are impossible to work with. Yesterday's workflow ... today ? that doesn't seem right
- Menus don't make sense to me in Sonar. Too many items, too confusing.
- (in the past), non-native support of VST is one of the biggest things that made me not take Sonar seriously. I mean, freeware software natively supports VST.
- No audio editor built in, this is a HUGE + with SL/SX and even SE !.

I could probably keep going but the truth is, I think that you will have to decide for yourself on this one. Grab the demo of Sonar, Ableton and Cubase (SX1 demo is available which is quite similar to newer versions in most ways).

I also noticed that Cubase takes a lot less CPU power to do the same things Sonar does, almost half the CPU power in fact, I ran the same setup in both programs with a notable difference in power consumption, which was strongly to Cubase's favor.

All up, if you can get to grips with Ableton, go with that, its one of the best programs out there (even though I personally didn't choose it), if not, then try Cubase and Sonar and see which you prefer.

Hope this rant helps :)

P.S.: I own Cubase SL3 and I just find that I get things done with it. The dongle is very stable and there are no driver issues or anything like that, it's really quite easy to install and work with. I have tried the following programs in great detail...

- Tracktion: not enough features, i need a mixer, rewire slaves run very slow, ugly GUI.
- Sonar: points mentioned above, workflow
- Cubase: love you baby even though you are a little buggy at times
- Ableton: the way of the future, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this. Hopefully they think about more than just loop based creation in the future.
- Logic Audio: MACs are expensive !!!! but a nice choice, still prefer cubase to it though
- ProTools: eeeeek, never understood why anyone even liked this ? Why is it an industry standard ?? I just dislike it, doesn't sound as good as Cubase, has kinda a flat sound, hard to describe ...
