Ok! this is a K-v-R special – a ‘BEST’ thread

But on a serious note, umm! :)

What software applications you know of that do a very good job of noise reduction (typical high gain background noise when trying to get very very quiet sounds) that can FFT the signal and allow a user selectable reduction of the ‘selected’ sample of noise?

Peter

also... on a similiar note. what software (freeware) would be used to remove the crackle and pops from vinyl. I sample my vinyl collection, but I often get little pops and surface noises. how do i remove those. sorry to hijack the thread. : )

Adobe Audition:
http://www.adobe.com/products/audition/main.html

I tested this alongside the Waves Restoration Suite (which costs around three times as much) and got what I considered to be better results with Audition (and much quicker: in Waves you have to manually adjust settings to get the results you like best, while Audition you can choose a small section of the waveform that is hiss/noise only, and it will then strip it out of the whole track for you with a single mouse click).

I rendered both examples and sent them to a few friends. Audition was unanimously regarded as better by those who listened (I did not tell them which .wav file was which software  )

I had Audition - now gone, while very good noise reduction - I need better than that even :)

I like Voxengo Redunoise but can't really compare it to anything else...

Better than Audition? My god, I wish I had your budget...You are now into forensic software/hardware territory.

Yes I was looking at that, I need to find out what vox means by 'high resolution' in figures and also what 'musical removal' means :)

For noise reduction right now I'm not convinced there actually IS better than Audition... :? It's certainly the choice of many professionals...

As I said before, I think that Waves is LESS good. There was however a "Restoration Shoot Out" article in a recent Sound on Sound, which concluded that of those tested (Waves, Bias and Sony), Sony Restoration came top overall. I hope that helps.

(exactly how messed up are your recordings  :hihi:

It helps to know what is crap, so I can take waves out of the equation :)

 well I have a very very low noise floor anyway, so not messed up - this is for experiments with taking hardware to the limits for really really quiet sounds that are tied into the then raised broadband noise.

My neighbours keep informing me that the best noise reduction they can think of doesn't require any plugins at all... It is just a simple flip of the power-switch on my speakers...

I think they are covertly trying to tell me something about my marathon mixing sessions...

Damn them all!
