can a midi cc message (or other) tell a particular control on a vst how much to move?

in other words, say I am playing a live set and I need the volume of a particular vst changed but I don't want to move a slider or turn a knob on my controller. I would rather just hit a pad (korg kontrol 49) and have it change on the spot and also change perfectly.

I was trying to do this but I only seemed to be able to have the volume change to either completely down or completely up.

I know, I know, basic midi question

Yes.
What host are you using?

brainspawn forte (for live use)

hm.
I know nothing about Forte.
Usually you can select the VST parameters and either assign cc to them or you'll be told which one to use.
In energyXT, I just found a way to make the sequencer start playing by sending in audio, so at the first chord from the guitar the sequencer starts. Cool for live use, more useless here in the living room :)
But assigning CC to VST parameters is pretty simple in most hosts. Look under automation or envelopes or something like that. Or simply CC map or something.

Anyone else who DOES know Forte?

see, I don't think it is really a forte question because what I am talking about is more of a general midi question.

i know how to send midi cc messages to filter knobs, volume knobs...etc...etc...

what i can't figure out is if it is possible to send one message telling something to move a certain amount.

does that make any sense? i would like a volume to go from 1 to 5 with the push of a button on my controller.

Yah. In eXT that's what envelopes are for. Or at least that's one thing you can use envelopes for. An event that's triggered by an incoming midi note, and that you can program to last however long and go however far you need. Finding out how it's done in Forte is your job :)
But I'm sure there are VST midi effects that do it.

well a midi pad will generate a CC message for the assigned number. if it's velocity sensitive, the value generated will depend on how hard you hit it. if not, then it will just generate a fixed value (which could also technically be anything depending on the manufacturer).

what you need to do is translate the midi CC value. you'll may also want to translate the CC number, but maybe not. there are a number of plugins around that will do midi translation for you. set the translator to respond to your particular pad's cc number, and have it convert any value it generates to a fixed value - that's what you want your synth to respond to.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.
