As much as I stick up for FL unfortunately this is the one downside to it being an all in one application. However imo that's not a bad thing, it is clear that it's best used for those who occasionally need audio recording. But imo because it costs so little you can combine it with another App for recording. One that has limited midi, but geared towards audio recording. For me that choice is Adobe Audition, at a price tag of 450 (more if FLxxl) for both you've got a good solid DAW...and even better FL can rewire to AA and AA can be used as the default wave editor in FL...soma wrote:OK I've said I'd like a differnt GUi and a modular mixer but the one thing I most need to get used to is how FL handels Audio in the audio tracks.
I just haven't adjusted from the way I am used to. (For days I kept erasing what I had just added by clicking on it, thinking I was going to select it or get a menu)
Is there an option for viewing a wave file you want to keep on disk, so you can cut out the parts you don't want?

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

I was thinking of loading it into Tracktion. Much cheaper and I must say I'm partial.
I have to justify allthis with a big fat, I haven't bought FL yet. I've just downloaded the demo a few times. (and honestly liked it a whole lot but just felt bothered somehow. I've been blaming it on the GUI.)

What I was saying is that outside KVR, such reasoning as "my music sounds darker because of the UI on the software I use" would only result in vulgar responses.pHz wrote:come on jmh ... OF COURSE visual experience affects your emotional state and thus also the music you might then make ...

Just so you know, I have a very similar background to you when it comes to visual stuff, so I'm likely equally aware about how the visual side of things affect things
It's just that out there in the real world, that scary place we sometimes have to deal with, the mere idea of one's music being influenced by the colors of one's tools to the degree that it can be observed by the listeners is considered a lack of skills to begin with. "These 4 tracks sound dark because he used FL, these two sound bright and clear because he used Live with the default colors, then track 6 sounds like muted blue thanks to being done in Nuendo", I guess you should get the point by now... I've yet to see a musician whose output was defined by the looks of his tools.
Will the world one day be plastered all over with pastel sounding music if Tracktion becomes the number one sequencer?
In other words: it's by far NOT a fact that the overall appearance of an application results in audible difference in one's material. And repeated: if such a phenomenon happens, it's lack of skills or shall we say 'professionalism' of the user in question, not a defect of the application.
I'm not denying any effects ANYTHING that inspires or affects one's moods (hell, sometimes I get inspired by emotions, at other times weed, right now my freelance web design project and its graphics part got its biggest boost from one particular Ansel Adams photograph, fall hitting us here has affected my overall work efficiency positively), but drawing "conclusions" such as that FL's color scheme affects what kind of music is written with it and stating that as a fact... puhh-leeesh =)
I wouldn't mind hearing some examples though if there's any kind of proof out there
Regards,
JMH

GUIs affect sales! That much is very clear.
Your surroundings do have an effect on your music. Making music at night is differnt than making music in the day. Making music in a small room with no windows is differnt than making music outside or in front of a window. The listener might not be able to tell, but it effects teh way you work and the way you feel when you are making music. It might not be apparent to others but it's there for sure. (GUI's are not only colors either. There is a fine are to enabling a user to accomplish tasks through graphical interfacing, not just switching a picture or a color.)

I love a darker GUI such as FL's, eXT's or Tracktion's, as I prefer working in a darkened room, and bright GUIs are too much. I would however love to be able to choose the colour scheme of FL - in a similar way to being able to choose the colour scheme in Windows - I would guess this would be easier to implement than skins.

Although it's almost certain the GUI affects the way you feel, and music should at least partially be an expression of your feelings.. then I think their is something in this, but I really suspect the degree of impression and how that translates into music that the GUI is actually responsible for in real terms would be almost negligible, but again it's impossible to know owwweeeeaaahhh.....

It's well known that colour affects mood, therefore colour is bound to have an effect on your productions. No?

no. actually if i have in mind to make a special sounding track i can start fl, tracktion, or nuendo... the same special sounding tracks is coming out, same bassline, same drumtracks, same mood. is not the colour of the mixer that affects my productions, but my productions affects my (and any other's) mood. change the point of view. "It's well known" for you but i'm a different person.
