voxengo & psp plugs master grade?

I hear alot of people talking about these plugs. Are they on the same level or quality as high end expensive plugs? I believe you get what you pay for, Am I wrong? Are these plugs really that good to substitute other high end plugs or is people just saying this because hey cannot afford to buy waves or uad, ect.

In this case I believe it is not true - "you get what you pay for".

I have used both. Waves has a few that I find useful - but Voxengo is really onto something. Try their demos. Many of Waves' plugs have been around with more or less the same functionality for years - IMHO - they're been surpassed by many newer plugs with designs that are better. Waves positions itself as the superior high end through it's pricing. This is a case where it's not backed up. Try L2 vs Elephant. Try C1 vs Crunchessor. Try Harmoniq, CurveEQ, or GlissEQ against ANY Waves eq.

A lot of people love PSP, though I never really got into their products. Voxengo stuff is amongst the best, and I think there's very few people who'd state otherwise.

no, you don't get what you pay for. There are so many plugins available that prove this statement wrong.
Have you checked out TLs plugins? You should, because they are among the best available, for free.
Check out Posihfopit, an excellent EQ, free.
Having said that, I can recommend Voxengo's plugins. PSP plugins are good, too. It's all a matter of taste.
Do a search for freeware plugins in the KvR database. Some are VERY good.

Like mastering as it, is very much a matter of different tastes and preferences and also directly dependant from the music style you're into. So also the plugins you would use for that purpose are very different, I fear.

I personally don't like Voxengo plugs, but I believe very much to the words, fritzman said. There are great tools even as freeware out. And everywhere you will find another good tool for your purposes (PSP, Waves, DigitalFishPhones, TL, iZotope, BBE).

It is not that good if you concentrate merely to one "brand" in this case. And the price is absolutely NOT a quality criterion (even in the "mastering" area).

But if you are really in to mastering on pro level, you should also take a look at the shopisticated hardware solutions.

When it comes to VST plugins, I hate to draw a distinction between channel and mastering plugins. Plugins are either good, or compromised. Some vendors sell plugins that are compromised so you can use a lot of them. Yuck. Most DAW's have freeze, or offline processing or at the very least you can export the audio and reimport it. So there is no excuse for accepting compromised sound simply due to lack of CPU. I find the Voxengo stuff to be exceptionally good - if a little CPU intensive. But I choose quality every time. Kjaerus stuff uses different methods, and can achieve high quality with low CPU use. That's great - and I have no hesitation to use Kjaerhus stuff for mastering either. They have different characters - I think Voxengo seems to have more of a glossy transparent sound which I love. Waves are over-rated, and they spend too much time trying to 'protect' their products by screwing their paying customers. This causes the crackers to rise to the challenge, and therefore Waves crack users appear to be better accomodated than paying Waves users. If Waves just made good products for a fair price with simple registration protection, maybe they could be competition to Voxengo and Kjaerhus. PSP stuff is very nice too - different flavours.

Voxengo is very transparent which is great for mastering. I've only ever used Vintagewarmer and only in the mixing phase. But having said that.. none of these native plugins do what my analog gear does.

I once had a mix that I mastered at my friend's studio with native plugins, the UAD-1, Voxengo, Powercore, and then analog gear

Crane song STC-8, Manley Massive Passive EQ, FATSO, and reran it all through a distressor and by far the better results came from the analog gear.

I think analog does something with the levels that digital can't quite do yet. but its getting there and will arrive soon.

Try WWAYM Dynamix and Kjaerhus's dynamics plugins for great bang for buck that I think rivals or surpasses any more expensive plugs.

Voxengo plugs are excellent--among the best out there and at the same price, unbeatable--especially Pristine Space paired with Spirit Canyon IRs and Elephant 2. Great support, too.

I also have PSP Vintage Warmer and love it too. Looking forward to getting PSP-84, perhps the best software delay available.

Voxengo = top support, fast paced product updates, transparent upgrade pricing, licence transfers allowed (as they should, but Voxengo doesn't even charge licence transfer fees), nice freebies, great plug ins.

Kjaerhus is fine too - just check the Classic range of quality freebies!
