Ive just ordered some software from
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
and recieved an email saying they need me to uplaod a photo of the front and back of my credit card to verify! I can see this reduces risk for them, but it increases the risk for me.
Anyone else ever come across this sort of thing before? The software Im ordering is a lot cheaper from them so I would like to get it from them if possible but uploading photos of my credit card is putting me off big time.
Does this sound too risky to you lot?

HI

Your joking of course?

Cancel the order or something - I have made thousands of CC transactions and never heard anything like this except when some shit calling himself PayPal asked for my pin number.

Even if they are a reputable company - they have your details why the hell a photo of your card!

I would tell them to forget it or sort your order out.

Flipper.

They say they only need it from international first time orders. Its a big store an all but but I dont see why the customer should burden extra risk. heres a quote from there page at

International Orders

If you are a first time "mail order or on-line" customer, or if you are using a new or different credit card for the first time at B&H, upon completing your on-line order, you must fax or e-mail a copy of both sides of your credit card to 212-239-7549. Our Email address is verification@bhphotovideo.com, (Does NOT apply to customers from Canada).

Please include the invoice number (that you will get when completing your order) along with the copy of your card. Your card will be charged & the merchandise committed upon submission of your order.

If you have previously ordered online or by phone/fax with this credit card and it is already on file, no fax is required. (Note: If you have ordered before, the only way the web site system can recognize you as a repeat customer is if you use exactly the same name, address and phone number information. Any variation will cause the web site to conclude that you're a first time customer and hold the order pending receipt of the fax.)

Call them and make sure this is for real.

BH Photo is one of the few really reputable camera stores in Brooklyn. But I've ordered tens of thousands of dollars of gear from them, and never had any question like the one you report. These people are very pleasant to deal with, as New Yorkers go. They are *the* reputable camera store.

Its for real, they have it on their website (only applies to international orders though). Ive emailed them and asked if theres any other way.

No way should you send sensitive information like that through an insecure medium like email... At the very least they should provide a secure (at least 128-bit HTTPS) site to upload the image to if they're encouraging you to send stuff like that over the Internet. Otherwise, you could use a web-to-fax gateway, but *make sure* it's secure (SSL and so on).
Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

I am a merchant also.
There is no AVS verification (Address Verification System) on international credit cards.
This is a huge gamble for us merchants.
If the transaction turns out to be fraud we basically have no recourse and loose all the money.
Since most international credit card fraud involves stolen numbers on the net a copy of the actual card helps us relax a bit even though it's still a very high risk.
You see most on-line scam artist can get your numbers and address but they can not get the actual card.
I have personally dealt with B&H and they are a great company.
I would say give them a break and fax over a photo copy of the card.
If you are worried about security ask them if it's OK to mask out a few numbers on the card.
I think they will agree, this fax doesn't really cover them at all but at least it gives them some sense of security.

Here is another idea.
Tell them you will overnight a Money Order if they give you free shipping or/and pay for the overnight delivery.
They will happily jump on it.

They do have a secure website upload option, and I would do it if I can mask some numbers. Ill email them again to see if they'd go for this.

Thanks for the responses.

Won't they accept it via postal mail?
