ermm you're free to equate the two.. However, its far from techphobia. and to generalize someone negatively before knowing them I feel is a shame.

I'd say its more fear = staying safe and also if something can be used for good, it could theoretically be used for bad too.. a computer is far from a perfect (safe) environment.

:)
this is not generalizing or me simply "not knowing you". i'm sure you're a real swell guy, but you also do not understand how BT works, and your ignorance has caused you to see dangers which aren't real. that's a plain fact, and the only one who oughta be ashamed is you for replacing research, reading, and understanding with kneejerk reactions.

nothing created by humanity is perfect, but a properly administrated computer is in fact "safe".

Props to Props! :)
well you have to admit, aside from Reason 3 there isn't a whole lot of new stuff going on in Prop land lately, and i think new stuff is what generates buzz here on KVR. i still use Reason now & then :)

While your efforts to explain the technology are laudable and appreciated, your defense of your rhetoric seems a bit thin. There are plenty of good reasons to be cautious, -such as not understanding the new technology yet! I don't randomly take prescription pills unless I know what they are going to do to me or a reliable source I trust, like a doctor, who has more xpertise, can assure me that it's great. Same with software for me.

kneejerk reaction?

The devil is in the "properly administered" clause. For those with neither the time nor the inclination to become computer savvy, discretion does seem to be the better part of valor.

But to each his own. thanks for posting the torrent :)

yeah, you don't even have to give them your e-mail address now! wow!
to me though, it's worth taking the 20 minutes to sit down and read the important stuff about "what's new". it's really easy to punch some shit into google and go "oh ok, THAT is what that's about!". that's really the only difference between me and people who are not "computer savvy". the most time-consuming aspect of it is that people know i know shit, so they always call me when they do dumb stuff like install spyware or use IE :( "hey Patrick, can you fix my computer". ARGH!

gotta love web forums.. where anyone can come in and tell anyone else how ignorant they are from the comfort of home. :hihi:

I'll say this.. any system where you are connected to other computers (ie the internet) and in the process of transfering information, there is a potential risk of trouble. I dont care how secure you think you are; if it was constructed on a computer, it can be deconstructed on a computer. thats my motto.. it keeps me safe.

It would probably be a little hard but I'm thinking its possible even for checksums to be duped and for software to have nasties in them. is it a high risk? nope. but its still a risk... even on a bittorrent. not to mention the fake files and various other garbage floating around.

If you define this as "safe" then go ahead.. However, I define "safe" differently.

I've seen and heard of enough 'secure' software and systems be manipulated in the past 10-12 years to be allowed to step back and get a little leery at yet another method of data transfer. :)

..if thats ignorance, then I suppose I am and let me tell you its absolutely bliss.

you know, when thinking about what you said ealier, i figured you'd say something like this, and my response is, "where does this line of reasoning go?"
i'll tell you where: nothing is secure anywhere, ever!
this leads me to a bunch of interesting rhetorical questions
-how is it that thousands and thousands of people successfully use it all the time for legitimate things without problems?
-why the hell would a company like Propellerhead choose to distribute in such a manner when it surely endangers the data and security of millions of users?
-wouldn't that make the company look really bad?
-also, if both the protocol and cliet application are open-source, with a robust development base, don't you think all them smart peoples with their book-learnin' would catch security issues, which are of tantamount importance to said smart people?
in the end, it's fine if you don't wanna use it. it's your loss. it's a great way to get stuff quickly and easily. i got the Windows version of ReBirth 338 in 12 minutes, it was 100% hunky-dory, and it didn't blow up my machine or steal all the money in my bank account. i'm one lucky sonofabitch!:D
BTW folks, BitTorrent is open-source. if you know C & Python you can go over to its SourceForge page and see how it works and how totally crazy insecure it is...

BACK ON TOPIC NOW!
has anyone actually been using ReBirth again since they re-released it? i always kinda like the crazy/weird approach to getting patterns programmed in because i found that the sheer annoyingness of it led to me doing way different stuff than what i would come up with sitting in front of a regular keyboard playing away.
i have found that you CAN use it @ different sampling rates in ReWire, it's just that the synths' pitches are totally screwed up, and require tricky adjustment of the Pitch wheel & possibly your patterns. it feels like it's simply that the sampling rate is expected to be 44.1 and so when you run @ 48 KHz, the synths are playing 8.843% higher than they should.(48/44.1=1.0884353741496598639455782312925)
to further pull the thread back to ReBirth, here's the only song i ever "finished" that is 100% ReBirth (and MAN is it terrible!)Embarassing MP3

I'm liking this program. Lots of fun. Definitely a different way of making music. Lots of great song examples at www.rebirthmuseum.com . Quite good for such a simple instrument.

I like the PCF (pattern controlled filter). Is anyone aware of a freeware VSTeffect similar to this.

Of course you did since you're all-knowing..

how is it that thousands and thousands of people successfully drive a vehicle w/o a seatbelt without problems? these are lifes mysteries..
SleepyP wrote: -why the hell would a company like Propellerhead choose to distribute in such a manner when it surely endangers the data and security of millions of users?
because as you said before, nothing created by humanity is perfect. But more to the point, they were probably tired of the cost of hosting the files on their own servers? Just being online endangers your security.. this one reasoon why some people dont have their DAW's connected to the net.
SleepyP wrote: -wouldn't that make the company look really bad?
Yep. it would. but as I said before (perhaps you overlooked it so you can continue on with your speech to me).. its low risk.
SleepyP wrote: -also, if both the protocol and cliet application are open-source, with a robust development base, don't you think all them smart peoples with their book-learnin' would catch security issues, which are of tantamount importance to said smart people?
its just using HTTP for the tracker and TCP for the transfer no?

but see.. theres where you piss me off. You're being arrogant and especially so when you dont even know my background and you're being condescending to me. You surely wont get your ideas across to well with such an approach.

OTOH perhaps since you really don't know me I shouldnt really care about your comments towards me.. :) tough decision.

well I agree with part of your statement.

In any event, I got it off the p2p in about a day and a half.. it was fine too. I never said using the torrent would most definately/instantly blow up one's computer. All I said is there was a risk of trouble as there always is with data exchange and transfer. If I'm having to open ports I'm suspicious - period. Beat me with the stupid stick all you want but its my decision. I'm free to have one right? oh wait thats right.. im too stupid to have one :smack:
SleepyP wrote: BTW folks, BitTorrent is open-source. if you know C & Python you can go over to its SourceForge page and see how it works and how totally crazy insecure it is...
oh... well I only know Java and a bit of Assembly.. I guess this excludes morons like me.. anyways, I never said it was 'totally crazy insecure' - you're blowing things out of proportion. Just that things can occur.. theres NO promise or guarantee that ALL the systems on the p2p are all secure systems. I'm sure the risk is very low. However, its not a risk I'm willing to take.

cheers.

you dumbass, back on topic, no more talk about this crap. did you try out using ReBirth again? how was it?
what is the the extent of possible control that can be done via MIDI? can you do pattern changes and stuff that way? control the knobs via CC? these are pertinent questions for those looking to use RB with a ReWire host.

Post

ah, found the goods in the most unlikely place: the manual!
Here it is in PDF format
the info you need starts on page 124, and Appendix C (page 192) is a list of all the controls' MIDI CC mappings. you can pretty much control everything remotely via MIDI CC :)
