FL Studio is confusing, Orion seemed better organised. However, I just didn't like the way windows couldn't be closed without removing the instrument, and the only way to 'get them out the way' was as a small window down the bottom.

I've got both FL Studio and Live 5 and they handle heavy CPU usage differently. FL Studio starts to break up around 70% or higher CPU usage; Live 5 keeps on going up to 90% but I managed to hang the UI - even though the sound kept going!

I tend to use FL Studio the most, mainly as it's piano roll offers a lot of tools. I can put up with the miniature UI and quirky layout for that. Plus its seems pretty stable, and I get lifetime upgrades for free (anything new, of course, isn't free!).

I did find the Orion demo seemed unstable. That clinched it for me.

My tuppence worth.

Other programs I've played with just let you hit play and record and go as long as you need. I don't tend to always plan out how long I'm going to play a particular line before before I start.
You need to set pattern lenghts before hand, best way is to set some reasonable lengths for few patterns and then put them into the playlist (or have one i.e. 1024 long pattern - double click the length in the generator toolbar). Put Orion into Song mode, hit the record button in the toolbar and then play button. Play with your midi keyboard - or if you want use the keyboard mode (F12).

one of the things I don't get about Orion - pattern-handling is soooo unflexible and unintuitive... :? - how can you cope with that?

erm, easily?

jeez..here we go again..

The best METALLICA instrumental...

can you split audio tracks in song mode yet,
how about if you make a pattern length of say 5000 steps, can you zoom out to see it all, or is it still scrolling mania,
if you lay down a pattern, can ya step through generators,
just a few of many hassles...
I know a reverb was added, but was anybody asking for that???

Been playing some more. I guess you can make a super-long pattern and then reduce it later, but that does seem somewhat unintuitive to me, at least at this point. In FL Studio, you can write whatever you want in the step sequencer, then switch to a new pattern and play another instrument in real-time. You can play as long as you like, and the pattern length automatically adjusts for the length of time you play.

Apparently, Orion doesn't worth this way. Am I wrong?

apart from Orion every single sequencer I know of works this way - and why not?

nope, thats how it works.. at least thats how I record. Just make the pattern super long, record, shrink the pattern length down appropriately afterwards. done.

It is different from fruity because its not fruity, its orion :P

why are you asking us? we didnt code the program.. go ask Rich if you want an answer :P

I'd say, though, its just the way it is and we have to deal with it.

you don't have to deal with it - if you can that's great for you as the synths and most of the fx are awesome but the playlist is imho still just phatetic... :?

What's "phatetic"...

I meant 'pathetic' in the sense of 'piss-poor' (and b.t.w.: sorry for the typo)

...I guess I'll go do something.. productive now.. :phones:
