Im working on a peice that is calling for a dark trombone sound, like absurdly blasting it.

Does such a SF or sampleset exist? any cheap/free ones?

Post

I LOVE that sound :) Do you mean a bass trombone like this one?

Them Bad Bones - 5 second sample

If so, let me know and I'll see what I can do. ;)

Cheers,
Alex

I've got a bone, and that's really the only noises I can coax from it these days, dirty and blasty.
Anti-aliasing is for "synthmonk%ys".

yes something like that! A blasting trombone can greaten a dark track. When I saw Manson live there was this guy on the trombone who would absolutely blast his shit and it was awesome (i dont even like most of MM's music)

how about ProjectSAM Trombones ???

i think they really blast like hell ...

There is nothing like a real horn section to do some amazing things live or to a track. There are few virtual horns that I think are worth the 300 odd euros they ask for. Some synth horns are OK if you are after that specific synth horn sound -- they have their place.

Out of the one or two sample or formant based horns that I actually think are good, yeah Project Sam is OK, as mentioned. I have a couple of excellent sound fonts that I wouldn't hesitate to use *in a background*, but not up front.

Maybe I'm crazy, but the sound of a real bass trombone -- even a single sustained note -- has yet to have it's equal in a sampler -- there are just too many natural variables to emulate.

However, Garritan says their new Jazz Ensemble is tops, and Gary told me that it includes a bass trombone. Love to hear what it's like when GG releases it.

Anyway, to feel that bone-smashing gut punch from a bass trombone is so cool, IMHO. Worth taking time to get it right for sure. Funny thing is, most people I know have never even SEEN a bass trombone, and when they do, they usually say: "WTF is that thing?!?!?!"

well, sure. every instrument is better than samples. this is generally with everything. i tested and tried a lot of brass sections and i really think that the sam trombones for around 130 bucks are really the best you can get. plus you have a lot of articulations to make it even more real. the only thing which is still missing is the legato tool, like on VSL stuff :)

Well, actually I think some instruments are well suited for sample-based use, like flutes and woodwinds for example, but big brass 'blasts' like Chase mentioned he wanted are hard to emulate short of just recording a musician doing them.

When you start a note in a trombone, say Bflat, and then flat that note further by widening/loosening while blowing more air through your lips, you get that modulated blasting sound, yet still maintain the note. In a sense, you are over-driving the mouth piece. It is extremely difficult to emulate this effect realisitcally, though it has been done and most people wouldn't know the difference I suppose (except for this place, where people can yell "it's too synthy sounding!", etc.)

Interestingly, I played a recording of a violinist to a friend, who swore it was a synth. I played that same track for a few other friends out of curiosity and they said the same thing to a man, yet it was a flawless recording :hihi: So go figure eh? ;)

Yep, I think the Sams horns are worth getting at that price. Just listening to Ixox songs proves their worth.

well can anyone direct me to regular trombone plugs, sample sets or soundfonts?
