You guys really are making me sad.

When i was a kid growing in a small town in Texas, I had neither the ability nor the means to buy a DX7 or an M1. I wanted both of those boards more than I could ever express. When we would travel to larger communities (50 miles to the largest, 30 to one slightly smaller), I would pick up a copy of Keyboard magazine and just gaze longingly at pictures of what at the time I thought was immensely cool gear.

What's with all the vitriol, seriously?

I didnt say that the Dx7 was bad mind you- I just absolutely HATE the DX7 rhodes. The majority of the DX7 sounds are pretty cool. but when you try to start mimiking a rhodes, I have problems.

There is a Wurly Patch that I quite like on the dx7 TBH

you can shoot me now - i really don't mind most of the m1 presets (including that italo-house piano). I just don't like to hear these sounds in euro/tarce music, in fact, i don't really like most euro/tarnce that much but what do i know?

I still own a DX7 but I never use it anymore. Back in the eighties I only used presets I had tweaked myself. The factory presets were absolutely useless.
I remember I was even kinda dissapointed with the sounds it had. Used lots of chorus and delay on the sounds. Also had a polysix at the time which I actually liked better. Still think the second album by Talk Talk really makes good use of the DX7. But you guys probably don't like Talk Talk. Coming back to the piano sound. I had it but I never used it. Recently I purchased NI Fm7 XpressKeyboard and that one has some very useful sounds. Quality-wise even better than the original DX7.

Blimey, we have got this far and no-one has mentioned the Fairlight Orch5 Stab !! LOL

I too used to lust after the DX-7, M1, et al and I love the sounds they make because the music that I grew up with as a teenager was made using them. Many of them were overused and lost their edge, but now, with nostalgia and hindsight, they still hold a magic for me.

I was given an old, dead DX-27 recently and I too, like a previous poster, hang on to it because I wanted a DX so much as a kid !

just thought of another wonderful memory. anyone remember that awful d-50 brass sound that was in some mega cheezy 80s music? (i think phil collins used that a bit as well)

Hehe,

When Mystahr came to stay we went to a secondhand music shop and they had one for sale. Thought about buying it as well but they were asking too much.

And there is me just downloaded about 500+ patches for it, the Linux version that is.

I don't mind the sound itself, but it was overused and I wish it wasn't called "Rhodes" because it doesn't sound like one.

The sound I never want to hear again is soprano sax.

I think I could handle sopr sax in the hands of someone innovative, who doesn't want to be Kenny G.

In fact, I don't mind hearing Wayne Shorter or Trane on a soprano, ever.

cool, now i remember hearing that and forgeting about it. oh well, everyone seems to hate the m1 for some reason. strange, even though it may not have been as flexible as some of the synths today, it still did a lot considering the standards back then.

what's even stranger, i still can't stand most of the sounds on the triton.

DX7 is pretty cool. I also really love the sounds on the Korg M1. I wish I had one.

The electric pianos on the M1 have an unbeatable Chick Corea sound. I love it!
