Hi im working on a tune using TR-909 samples loaded into battery 2 and audiorealism's bassline to get 303 sounds..question is, I dont want to use the distortion built into the 303 bassline so can anyone reccomend a really good distortion plugin for cubase sx. Also a plugin that can add something to my 909 samples. What sort of effects do the pros use to make their 909's 303's and 808's sound better?

EQ and compression are the first tools to go to for those 909s. After that, getting creative with something like overdrive/distortion and... practically anything :) Dominion and Blockfish from DigitalFishPhones are great freebie tools for shaping drums.

As for the distortion... before people recommend you all the expensive commercial ones, check out Voxengo's Boogex. It's practically fixed to my ABL now, the absolutely first distortion plugin to try out :)

And don't forget to experiment with compression and EQ on that BassLine either! :)

if you're using SX, quadrafuzz can give some serious grit to acid lines but be careful to not make it sound like poo. I sometimes use audio damage's fuzz+ (free at audiodamage.com) for really thrashy 303 sounds, but Antares Tube in devil mode might be closer to the typical overdriven acid sound. Also, compress the hell out of your 303 (blockfish would do the trick).

Also, Camelphat3 looks perfect for this sort of thing. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like exactly the sort of plugin i'd use on a 303 line.

one is an warming/saturation emu, the other and Amp emu..none is good for overdriven synth sounds...

vintagewarmer is a compressor first and foremost, and a compressor is essential for taming a dynamic 303 line. As for Trash not being suitable for overdriven synth sounds - why not? Guitar pedals weren't made for 303s either, but everyone uses them.

Acid lines can be very dynamic with all the tweaking of the filter cutoff, resonance, accents etc. Compressing the signal will yield better results, and more even results, especially if you compress before the distortion stage. That's all that I meant.

Ronny: Haven't tried the LA-2A on acid yet! I've been using the 1176SE on my Future Retro 777 but i'll try that out and see how it goes :)
