In a recent survey many Rhino users requested that 'Tick build a physical modeling synth. Here's something to calm your hunger until that happens...
A new bank based on the legendary VL sound engine is available for Rhino users. This first set features guitars, harps, basses, violins, pads and more programmed into useful patches. Audio demos are here: http://bigtick.pastnotecut.org/djsmaurer/vl1/vl1.html
Future banks (already under construction) will tackle flutes, saxes, solo and section brass with articulations and even the VL's synth models. It's physical modeling made easy.

I guess this is what addiction is. Except that the banks are so uniformly good, it is simply common sense (IOW, I bought the bank after only the most cursory of listens to the demos...). And while I enjoyed the Digital series, this particular one has some timbres I've really been looking for (with my ear) and I know that I'll be using a number of these patches, both straight and tweaked.
Now that the back-patting session has closed, a general question: I happen to be one of those who pretty much loathes a patch loaded with vibrato, and for the most part it is emulations of strings that seem to end up this way. I like some of the qualities in the various solo and ensemble strings in this bank, and figured I could just go in and turn off vibrato and any other effects that were causing the modulation. I believe I started with Solo Violin 1, but I couldn't for the life of me get rid of the vibrato - is it actually in the wave, or in the envelope?
Ideally I'd like to have a fairly straight sound, and then assign a modulation source so I can control when and to what degree any 'vibrato' is applied to the patch. If you could guide me in any way (and if not appropriate in general, then pm me) I would appreciate it.

Thanks for the nice comments. Yes, most of the violins have vibrato as part of the waveform and it cannot be removed. I've played with a real violinist for years and it was extremely rare to hear her play without vibrato. Another reason it was done this way is that vibrato in the wave sounds better when layering. This also gives the user one less thing to worry about.
However, the violins were the only instrument I was planning on doing this with so it should not be an issue in the future.

Hi Daniel,
The main thing is not whether or not they use vibrato, it is when and how much. It is not always immediately after the attack of a note, and the speed and depth can vary widely, as it should, to allow for maximum expression.

While I'm a percussionist, my main occupation is playing in a symphony orchestra for nearly 30 years, over 20 of which I've been happily married to one of the cellists! You could say that string sound and performance is in my ear.I've played with a real violinist for years and it was extremely rare to hear her play without vibrato.
I'm also used to being out in left field: one of the main reasons I came to Rhino was it's use of microtonality, and in certain tunings the layering has to be done carefully to keep a certain 'surface' that is added by the intonation - built-in vibrato that can't be independently controlled tends to muck this up a bit.Another reason it was done this way is that vibrato in the wave sounds better when layering.

I see. If possible, for any of the solo instruments (such as solo woodwinds), it would be great if one could allow the user to control that aspect. I may not have a need for ww and brass emulations, but I'll certainly give a listen. The violin vibrato delay can be controlled with the Phase slider. The further to the right, the less the delay. It actually functions as a sample start point slider. Also, the start point can be modulated by velocity.
It should be easy for me to take the same waves, cut off the vibrato and reloop them. I'll make these available to registered users in a few days.

I prefer ShareIt (although I don't hate PayPal as passionately as you hate ShareIt)and I own every Daniel-created Rhino bank. I'm curious - what's wrong with ShareIt anyway??

The choice of NOT having to use a card for one. Just deduct it from an account. I prefer Having that instance choice that Paypal provides, and shareit does not mikusan.

What I dislike about ShareIt:
1) You cannot use Hotmail, even though some people like me pay for the extended service.
2) You cannot select several banks and purchase the lot. It has to be one by one, which is tedious.

Well, the good news is that I do now accept PayPal. Just write me at: djsmaurer@charter.net with what you want and I'll provide you with all the details. There are limitations to ShareIt but it helps me concentrate on music more than business.
The other good news is that Classic VL Vol.2 is finished. Getting everything up on the web page is the last detail before release. I do still need some more mp3 demos for the page. If two people would like a free copy of CVL2 in return for some short audio demos using it, please write me. Nice sax lines and more are needed; see my other banks for what's expected. Just attach an example using a sound from a previous bank as a demo.
