My ass likes to whisper but the words it whispers can be quite hateful and violent...

JMH - sorry to offend you. It's just my blunt style - nothing personal. But the engineer who created this effect has explained very clearly how this effect was created. You are choosing to call him a liar in a public forum. I am choosing to 'believe' him - because my ear also tells me that this is most likely correct.

For every engineer actually producing hit records, there are thousands of wannabies having a go. Thousands of wannabies might be convinced that the Cher vocal was simply extreme Autotune. They certainly couldn't 'replicate' it, because they don't have the original vocal track. Sure - crude experiments with their own vocals and autotune will achieve something very similar. But thats the difference between wannabies and the real thing. Wannabies create demo recordings that are 95% release quality. It's that extra 5% that seperates a hit record from a bedroom demo. I have no problem at all understanding how much detail went into carefully splicing partial phrases of a vocoded track into the (presumably Autotuned) vocal track.

I have clear recollections of seeing Cher in a TV documentary actually saying specifically they used Autotune. I don't for one second believe they tried to hide this fact. I also do NOT believe the engineer is lying about using the Digitech Vocoder. It's an insult to him to suggest this - so i'm sorry if I i've offended anyone by defending him.

I spent most of the afternoon training my ass to sing in a nice Tenor. My pitch isn't there, but my range is increasing steadily.

Word.

Isnt there a hardware version of the auto tune where the pitch can be controlled by midi? i would say it was something like that.

you could even resynthesize her "voice" and splice it in, a vocoder would have to have a LOT of bands to be able to do that.

or you could even do it just by copying, pasting and pitch shifting a kazillion times in Acid pro :)

Greendoor :) I admit I took it more seriously than I should have. And yes, I'm aware that I am challenging the engineer's story... my stance on this issue comes mainly from those discussions years ago about this, including the part when the article came out and was met with snickering responses to the "but he left out the Autotune part" vein.

WFIW I still like that song, though it would have been a lot better with better drums :P And with each brainless aping of that vocal trick, my respect has risen towards the engineer for doing something that influential and doing it well - none of the similar vocal treatments I've heard since have had any real originality in them (ok, apart from this one Underworld track where apparently it's a TC Helicon process doing the thing, somewhere during the track it sounds as if the singer's head started shrinking all of a sudden :D).

And I have to hand it to you, keeping things this civil after a heated start in getting really rare here on KVR. It's as if the whole general vibe has recently turned into fullscale bitchfest... makes me enjoy these kind of discussions even more, even if I am disagreeing on something with the other participants :)

Finally... even though it hits close to home in my case, your wannabes versus the real thing comment is spot on.

Regards,

JMH

Sing through your nose. ;-)

No they used some sort of external voice processors and autotune get that effect.

Using talkbox technology, you could put a plastic cone over your most of you mouth, and attach a tube to the thin end of the cone. Put the opposing end of the tube up one nostril. Taking another piece of tube, insert it into the free nostril, and return the other end into you mouth. Put a Mic near you mouth and sing loudly.

You have now become a self modulating talkbox, and if you can ensure that your singing remains prefectly in tune with no slides, you have a cheap but effective CEHR effect.

Enjoy
