But the engineer who created this effect has explained very clearly how this effect was created. You are choosing to call him a liar in a public forum. I am choosing to 'believe' him - because my ear also tells me that this is most likely correct.
He's lying by leave-out. He probably used all the crap he claimed and used auto tune.

Can ANYONE post the "cher effect" using a talkbox? Why don't you post your results greendoor? I mean his explanation was so long and convoluted compared to just using automatic mode in AT that I have to wonder... if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck... ;)

On the other hand,

I challenge anybody to use Autotune alone and see how accurately you can come up with a "Believe" line. With hard and fast settings, Autotune can and will jump at unexpected times and not at the exact moment it "should" like in "Believe".

Let me reiterate that I buy into the fact that they probably used Autotune to a certain extent-- the ears don't lie, and I've been convinced. However, if you think it's so easily done with Autotune, be my guest and prove me wrong. If you don't have Autotune, g'head and use Gsnap, which is surprisingly good!

You MIGHT be able to get there with a lot of trial and error, using Gsnap in realtime until you figure out when to gliss your vox to the next note. But it's pretty obvious that Cher did her vocals and then left the producers to work on them, meaning that they didn't have the luxury of having her gliss her vox at just the right time to get that 'effect'. No, there was definitely careful tweaking and orchestration involved, whether it was Autotune, a Vocoder, or-- as I believe-- a combination of both.

greg, i think it's a combination of both. I certainly here some things that are definitely NOT auto-tune.

everyone knows you can get 'that sound' using auto-tune

nobody knows how to use a talk box to make the effect...
