joachime, that totally makes sense. I find crunchessor to be an extremely transparent compressor ... that's actually why I started this thread as I have heard many people say that it is a character compressor and I wanted to know how they got that character out :D

Compadre sound fantastic ! Kept the drums really tight, not too much character, but kinda squashed em together beautifully. I'll definitely check this one out.

pakana, hey bud :) I personally often run compressors on individual parts of the kit also but I do tend to run a soft compressor over the kit and possibly even a soft limiter to catch peaks. Track limiters are more useful than people realise I believe :D I think I might have to grab the GPP instead of using this BuzzMaxi limiter from now on.

damn, I just noticed that bmanic just said the same thing I did about drum compression :') oh well, emphasis is useful :D

Aleksey, I think your new algorithm is definitely going to be useful, I'm loving these new samples. They sound different to any other compressor I've heard but at the same time, they sound awesome ! Nice work mate :D

oh well ... off to work ...

Cheers folks

bmanic wrote:Yes, the blockfish example did turn out rather good. I used the Opto setting, tweaked the release to be really slow and had the lo-cut sidechain filter on too at about 12'o clock in the backpanel.

It goes to show how good freeware can be and the Fishfillet plugins are all of very high quality.
yes indeed! :-D (I often used to use similar settings on drums b.t.w. - but now it's GCO-1 for me all the way! :-D)

Here are some more, rather different compression examples. Custom tweaked from the Sintefex (that is, no 'models' used). I tried to Squash just the snare and kick without getting the cymbals to pump and I came up with some settings that sound a bit like Alekseys example.

Sintefex Custom 1

Sintefex Custom 2

Sintefex Custom 3

I'd love to see some UAD-1 owners run the Original Dry WAV file trough the LA-2A, 1176 and Fairchild fairly cranked and post some pictures of the settings used.

Cheers!

did you normalise your examples? (I did during mp3-compression)

b.t.w.: I more and more realize that the GCO-1 is indeed the holy grail of compression! :-D

hm - let's see....

GCO-1 in classic mode trying to make it smash it all

(not really - I could push it even harder but probably I'm really a wussie... :hihi:

Post

actually I think you were cheating :hihi: - I bet you put it through a limiter...

No, I haven't touched the volume of the files in any way. I tried to keep all examples at the same volume as the original untreated clip. It would have been smart to normalise everything but I'm too lazy to do it now afterwards. :)

Cheers!

And you used a different source file. I'd love to hear my original drum clip smashed trough the C1 :)

kilroy lol nice ! :D

i'm starting to like the kjaerhus compressor a lot too, very nice stuff... :D

Can I afford to buy Kjaerhus & Sonalksis :?: :?: :?: :? i dunno

so let's see ... on my ... TO/BUY list...

- GlissEQ (good digital eq to complete my voxengo collection) 80 $
- Sonalksis EQ & Compressor 400 $
- Kjaerhus Essentialls maybe ? I would buy em all if I could ... but i'll say essentialls for now, 228 $

now that's a lotta dosh ! :D I wonder sometimes if I should have just bought a UAD-1 ... but the fact that the card could be obselete in several years is a HUGE turn off for me :|

You guys rock, I love checking this thread :D

Cheers

GlissEQ is indeed a very good sounding EQ. I find I like the sound of it better than the Elemental Audio Equim plugin I spent so much money on. Great job by Voxengo on that one.

One word of advice: check out Voxengo's HarmoniEQ before you buy GlissEQ. When I heard how smooth and buttery HarmoniEQ was, it just about made my jaw hit the floor. I *desperately* want HarmoniEQ now, and truthfully I wish I had bought it instead of GlissEQ. Unfortunately, HarmoniEQ came out just a few months after I made the GlissEQ purchase. Asi es la vida.

But don't get me wrong - GlissEQ is an excellent EQ. HarmoniEQ is just that little bit smooother and nicer sounding.
