BeOS was on its way to being a kick-ass platform for music and video. Then bloody Palm bought it for their stupid palmpilots (a euphemism for wankers if there ever was one) and killed off the PC version. There's an open source clone being developed but who knows how far they'll actually get.

That's not what happened with BeOS at all. It just ended up in Palm's... err, hands, after everything else that happened. Google is your friend.

And yes, it was to be something special. Sadly those commercial software companies bailed out before even releasing a single bit of software, when things didn't look that promising - it would have made a difference, be it small, to have a few de facto standard music and graphic apps on the platform. Even after the Apple incident, had BeOS had something like Photoshop and Logic (about the most widely known apps that were supposed to be ported), even as just an alternative OS for Intel world, things would have most likely gone very differently.

Reading the article, it doesn't look as bad as I thought it would be, but I'm not terribly anxious to switch from XP to tell you the truth, especially not for my music computer.

Question is about release date/year - they expect 2GB to be good choice at that time.

Well, I think if you know a little bit of techie stuff about Windows OS you can tailor yourself a Windows XP Embedded...

I would like to ask: would you think that today's VSTs (we all have bunch of them, some as free ones) would be compatible with new (Vista) versions of Cubase, Cakewalk? I dont like idea that everything starts form zero. Some my friends skipped XP, they are happy with 98.

I have... but if (or more likely: when) I feel the need to reinstall I think I'll switch back to 2000.

Anyway, afaik vista = XP + DRM + eye candy

someone mentioned 'they should code a version specifically for digital audio'.. be careful what you wish for. their idea of a 'digital audio' pc is so bloated it makes me want to cry. your best bet is to start working on linux if you want to be able to slim it down. its quite difficult at this point because you have to really learn the packaging system of your distro, and most distros come by default quite bloated. i guess this is because people would rather have bloat than have not enough applications to do the things they want without learning to install them.

anyway, i'm going to code a host on linux some time. i'm at the point where i've decided most hosts suck. i said most, ok, some expensive ones are ok. i'm fairly sure without even looking through the available software that most of it running on linux (kde, gnome, etc) windowing systems is probably kind of junky. i'll have a basic host and my plugins working soon (next months) if anyone can give me the 'core' c++ code for a vst host (no graphics, no mixer, nothing special, just hosting a plugin and etc) it'll speed things up.

i'm actually really frightened about the new windows release, i've been telling some people with ms stock that they'd better keep a very keen eye on what's happening during the release of the new os because it might be bad. a lot of big companies are driving development on linux up a huge amount in this last quarter and that is affecting many areas.

Don't know if I'm speaking out of turn here but part of VST host is open source, the host part is I think.
Not sure if it's in C or C++.

I would really like to get a Linux based audio workstation going as well, I have tried the DeMuDi live CD and will be installing when I free up the disk space.

aint that right,that would be nice,no messing round in the registery ,switching various system tasks etc,blah blah
