So is this thing a go? I want it. Now!
I love the GUI, it looks awesome. Although I don't care for the stubby keys, I would actually prefer a Fizmo rack gui. The Fizmo racks are really rare and really fetch the $$$ on Ebay.

Oh, it's a "GO" alright, in terms of the true desire to see it completed rather than just discussed. However, it will take time to program it! Particularly since to the best of my knowledge there isn't a core team of coders who have officially stepped up to the challenge yet. There are certainly some key players in place (some of the existing Betabugs, plus new additions in both the coding and advisory capacities!), but it's just in the beginning stages of plan and attack. Don't expect it next week or anything.
I personally don't think I've ever seen Mully this excited about a project, so you can bet that he'll do whatever's in his power to make it a reality.

I spent months talking to them about this exact thing a couple of years ago. At first, they said that they are very interested. Then, they looked at what original code/docs/transwaves they could find and told me that they couldn't find much. Finally, they said that they were going to move into the s/w arena themselves and told me to take a hike.mute wrote: On the emulation note, i dont see why ensoniq/emu/creative wouldn't give permission.

Maybe this is a stupid question - if so, you can just reply with one of those 'idiot' smileys:
Where are the 'transwaves' going to come from that the Fizmo is based on? Seems that Ensoniq spent a great deal of time developing those source waves to begin with and I would highly doubt that it's a small task to create these from scratch.
By the way, an excellent article on the Fizmo is at the TapeOp bonus articles section found HERE

hi N, good to see you around here. i thought this thread might attract your attention.natqueencole wrote:I spent months talking to them about this exact thing a couple of years ago.
if betabugs cant get clearance from emu then they cant use, or rebuild, original transwaves. also, building anything like them would be quite a pain in the ass. each one is built up of 128 single cycle waves all trimmed and joined by hand.rockstar_not wrote:Where are the 'transwaves' going to come from that the Fizmo is based on? however, if emu does not give the ok, that doesnt mean that the project would have to be completely scrapped. it could no longer be a fizmo emulation (and more than just the source waves would have to be changed), but a killer wavescanning synth could still be built.
if a fizmo emulation is built, by anyone (betabugs, emu, etc.), i'd want to see a bunch of changes/enhancements anyway. i love the fizmo, but most areas of the synth had room for improvements.

Instead of using sampled waves, couldn't it have a wavetable made up of additive waves, with adjustable partials for each wave? That is how the softsynth Foorius works.

yes, that could be done too. thats how the microwave XT works. user wave loading can be done with resynthesis. (like kubik, or the XT sounddiver editor does.) for this kind of sound, i believe there could be ways to use granular for this sort of thing too.
of course, there are pros and cons to all the methods. it all depends on what direction the devs want to take and how true to ensoniq's original designs the devs want to be.

I suppose if it's 128 different stitched cycles for each waveform, them we could define a cycle then mutate it for the remaining 127. So long as [0] and [n-1] tend toward zero and have a consistent slope all could be well. Maybe use beziers to ensure the overlap is smooth. It's kind of the granulation that ugo suggests. I quite like the idea - we may even have the seridipitous event of reproducing one of the original waveforms..

this will be fun..
